Lakers hold off Hornets for victory

Kobe Bryant had 25 points while moving into ninth place on the NBA’s career scoring list, and Pau Gasol had 21 points and 13 rebounds in the Los Angeles Lakers’ third straight victory, 101-97 over the visiting New Orleans Hornets on Friday night.

Lamar Odom had 17 points and 13 rebounds, and Andrew Bynum added 17 points for the two-time defending champions, who have rebounded from a prolonged holiday skid and stories of minor team discord with five wins in six days, including three in the past four days.

David West had 23 points and 12 rebounds for the Hornets, who traveled a long way to open just a two-game road trip.

Bosh, Heat sneak past Bucks in OT: Chris Bosh had 16 points and 12 rebounds, leading the surging Miami Heat in a 101-95 overtime victory over the host Milwaukee Bucks that extended their road winning streak to 12 games.

Bosh scored 10 of his 16 in the fourth quarter and overtime, while LeBron James added 26 points and 10 rebounds. Andrew Bogut had a career-high 27 rebounds, Chris Douglas-Roberts scored 30 points for the Bucks.

• Matthews scores 36 in Portland’s win over Wolves: Wesley Matthews scored 29 of his career-high 36 points in the first half and the Portland Trail Blazers rolled to a 108-98 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves in Minneapolis.

LaMarcus Aldridge added 28 points and 10 rebounds for the Blazers, who beat Minnesota for the 14th straight time. Kevin Love had 30 points and 19 rebounds for the Timberwolves.

Ginobili leads Spurs past Pacers: At Indianapolis, Manu Ginobili scored 25 points to help the San Antonio Spurs beat the Indiana Pacers 90-87 and snap a two-game skid.

Tim Duncan had 15 points and 15 rebounds for the Spurs, who overcame a 15-point deficit to become the first team in the league to win 30 games.

• Gay powers Grizzlies to win over Jazz: Rudy Gay scored 28 points, Zach Randolph added 26 points and 11 rebounds and the Memphis Grizzlies won their third straight game, 110-99 over the Utah Jazz in Memphis, Tenn.

O.J. Mayo had 13 points for Memphis and Marc Gasol contributed 12 points. Paul Millsap led the Jazz with 20 points.

• Meeks, 76ers topple Bulls for win: Jodie Meeks scored 24 points, Lou Williams had 20, and the Philadelphia 76ers avenged a 45-point loss to Chicago with a 105-99 victory over the visiting Bulls.

Jrue Holiday added 19 for the 76ers, who lost 121-76 on Dec. 21 in Chicago. The Sixers hit their first nine shots in the third and 11 overall to turn a four-point hole into a 12-point lead.

Third-quarter spurt lifts Magic over Rockets: At Orlando, Fla., Jason Richardson and Brandon Bass scored 18 points apiece, and the Orlando Magic rolled to a 110-95 victory over the Houston Rockets. Kevin Martin led the Rockets with 27 points.

Zuccarello, Rangers rally past Stars in SO

NHL: Mats Zuccarello scored in the second round of the shootout and Henrik Lundqvist was perfect in the tiebreaker to lift the New York Rangers over the host Dallas Stars 3-2.

Lundqvist denied Dallas’ Jamie Benn, Brad Richards and Mike Ribeiro in the shootout as the Rangers earned the extra point.

Lundqvist made 28 saves for the Rangers, who got a short-handed goal from Ruslan Fedotenko and a power-play goal from Artem Anisimov.

Rafalski, Red Wings beat Flames in SO: Brian Rafalski scored his first two goals of the season, and Todd Bertuzzi had the only tally in the shootout as the Detroit Red Wings rallied for a 5-4 victory over the Calgary Flames in Calgary, Alberta.

Facing former teammate Miikka Kiprusoff, Bertuzzi beat the goalie with a nifty deke to his backhand.

Jimmy Howard made shootout stops against Alex Tanguay and Nicklas Hagman. On Calgary’s final chance, Rene Bourque missed the net.

Toews, Kane carry ’Hawks to SO win over Sens: Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane scored on Chicago’s first two attempts in the shootout, and the Blackhawks recovered after losing a late lead to beat the visiting Ottawa Senators 3-2.

Toews and Kane scored against Brian Elliott in the tiebreaker. Chicago rookie Corey Crawford stopped Alex Kovalev and Daniel Alfredsson to win it.

Kane also scored in regulation and Patrick Sharp added his team-leading 24th goal for Chicago.

NCAA: Texas Tech broke recruiting rules

College football: The NCAA put Texas Tech on two years of probation for a series of recruiting violations, saying 16 coaches or assistants sent nearly 1,000 impermissible text messages to football, softball and golf prospects.

The NCAA said the school discovered the violations and reported them. It did not add punishments beyond the school’s self-imposed probation, recruiting restrictions and scholarship reductions.

• TCU’s Patterson gets contract extension: TCU has extended coach Gary Patterson’s contract two years through the 2018 season.

The extension came a week after the third-ranked Horned Frogs completed a 13-0 season with a 21-19 victory over Wisconsin in the Rose Bowl.

Big names entering NFL draft: Alabama running back Mark Ingram, defensive lineman Marcell Dareus and wide receiver Julio Jones said they are leaving early to the NFL draft.

Wisconsin running back John Clay and Missouri defensive end Aldon Smith will also enter April’s draft.

ASU’s Bolden skips chance at draft: Arizona State cornerback Omar Bolden is returning for his senior season. He was one of four unanimous choices to the Pac-10 all-conference first team.

Garrigus powers way to leat at Kapalua

Golf: Robert Garrigus holed out a wedge for eagle on the 16th hole, then followed that with two big drives and to set up easy birdies for a 10-under 63 and a one-shot lead going into the weekend at the season-opening Tournament of Champions at Kapalua, Hawaii.

Garrigus was at 14-under 132 and will be in the final group with Carl Pettersson, who birdied the last hole for a 67. Jonathan Byrd shot 68 and was another shot behind.

Mariners announce $2.75M deal for Ryan

MLB: The Seattle Mariners have announced a $2.75 million, two-year contract with infielder Brendan Ryan.

The deal, which avoided salary arbitration, was agreed to last month. Ryan gets $1 million this year and $1.75 million in 2011.

He can earn an additional $400,000 this season and $750,000 next season in performance bonuses based on number of plate appearances.
