Sounders sign coach to extension

Associated Press
The Seattle Sounder have signed coach Sigi Schmid to a contract extension that runs through the 2015 season. Schmid has guided the Seattle Sounders to two U.S. Open Cup titles and back-to-back playoff berths in the club’s first two seasons in Major League Soccer. The 58-year-old Schmid is the MLS career leader in both regular-season victories (he has a 148-107-82 record) and postseason victories (19-10-5). Heading into Saturday’s home game against the Colorado Rapids, he is 35-21-25 in regular-season games with Seattle. The Sounders have the second-best record in MLS (9-4-8), and on Wednesday night advanced to the U.S. Open Cup semifinals with a 3-1 quarterfinal victory against the league-leading Los Angeles Galaxy.
