Golf roundup: Williams cruises in first day of match play

Third-seeded Chris Williams of Moscow, Idaho, needed just 13 holes of bogey-free golf Wednesday to defeat Bobby Kent of Los Gatos, Calif., 7 and 5 during the first day of match play at the 110th Pacific Northwest Men’s Amateur Championship at Bend, Ore.

Williams, the recent U.S. Open qualifier and Sahalee Players Championship winner, won three of the first four holes and never faltered.

No. 1 seed David Fink of Kailua, Hawaii, No. 2 Matt Rawitzer of Bellingham and No. 4 Nick Sherwood of Albany, Ore., also won.

In today’s round of 32, Williams will meet 35th seed Bobby Monaco of Eugene, Ore.

Women

Chessey Thomas of Spokane won twice to advance to the quarterfinals of the 110th PNGA Women’s Amateur Championship at Port Ludlow, Wash.

Thomas opened with a 2 and 1 victory over Szu-Hsuan Huang of Qualicum Beach, British Columbia. In the round of 16, Thomas, who competes for the University of Tennessee, beat Simone Strauss of Kirkland, Wash., 2 and 1.

Kaitlen Parsons (University High) lost in the opening round, a 4 and 3 decision against Cyna Rodriguez of the Philippines. Rodriguez also won her round of 16 match.

Beth Wrigley of Nine Mile Falls, Wash., the stroke medalist, won her round of 16 match at the 10th Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship to make the quarterfinals.
