New school location will be greener

The earth is moving at the corner of West Bismarck Avenue and North Fotheringham Street, where a new Westview Elementary School will open in August 2012.

The 24-classroom school will replace the existing building at 6104 N. Moore St., which dates to 1955, said Greg Brown, capital projects director for Spokane Public Schools.

He said the 59,000-square-foot building will also have rooms for art and music, a library, and a cafeteria separate from the gymnasium.

Westview will be built to U.S. Green Building Council silver Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design standards, Brown said, despite questions raised recently about how well the more expensive structures conserve energy.

He said district officials believe Lincoln Heights Elementary, which complies with the more rigorous gold standards, is performing better than estimated by the Joint Legislative Audit and Review Committee.

He said the total cost of the school, including equipment and furniture, will be $15 million: $10.2 million raised by a 2009 bond issue, the rest from the state.

ALSC Architects designed the project, Brown said.

The general contractor is Leone & Keeble Inc.

Maurices moves at NorthTown

Maurices is moving, down the hall and around the corner in the NorthTown Mall.

Manager Kari Bug-Wiltse said the new 5,572-square-foot location adjacent to Victoria’s Secret and across from the food court, although slightly smaller than the current space, is one she has coveted for two years.

The relocation is also an opportunity to completely overhaul the store without disrupting business, she said.

“It’s been 20 years since our last remodel,” Bug-Wiltse said. “Everything is brand new.”

A soft opening is scheduled for Thursday, a grand opening for June 18, she said.

Orange Legal relocating

Orange Legal Technologies is relocating from one downtown Spokane office to another.

Expected to be completed by July 1, the company will move from current space at the Paulsen Building to the Symons Building, Suite 210, 7 S. Howard St. It’s leasing about 2,200 square feet.

Orange Legal provides a number of electronic record and electronic discovery services. Headquartered in Salt Lake City, it has offices in four U.S. cities including Spokane.

One reason for the move, said John Munro, the company’s regional vice president, is to provide clients with more security for electronic records.

Pizza Oven moves into mall

Pizza Oven has moved into the vacated space in River Park Square created by the recent departure of Pizza Rita.

Operating Pizza Oven are Matt Rai and John Urquhart. Rai, a Washington State University grad, has owned the River Park Square Taco del Mar.

Cowles Co., which owns The Spokesman-Review, also operates and owns River Park Square.

Historic dairy renovation nearly done

Renovation work is nearly done at the historic Broadview Dairy building, 411 W. Cataldo Ave., along the north bank of the Spokane River in downtown.

The U.S. General Services Administration is leasing roughly 20,000 square feet of space from Huckleberry Bay Co., the building owner.

The renovated offices will be filled within the next two weeks by Spokane’s Department of Homeland Security/Immigration and Customs Enforcement workers. Those agencies were using offices in the Thomas S. Foley U.S. Courthouse, the Riverside Avenue post office and the Great Western Building, said Ross Buffington, a GSA spokesman.
