In brief: Texas defeats Arizona State, advances

College Baseball: In Austin, Texas, Mark Payton had a two-out RBI single to give Texas the lead in the bottom of the sixth, then scored on a throwing error to help the Longhorns beat Arizona State 4-2 to win the Austin Super Regional on Sunday and advance to their record 34th College World Series.

Riccio Torrez hit a two-run homer for Arizona State (43-18) in the top of the first, but Texas (49-17) pulled within one in the bottom of the inning on Erich Weiss’ RBI groundout.

• Florida eliminates Mississippi State: In Gainesville, Fla., Preston Tucker hit a three-run homer in the seventh inning to put Florida ahead and the Gators beat Mississippi State 8-6. Florida won the series 2-1.

After a pair of walks and a sacrifice, Tucker hit a 3-1 pitch to center to give the Gators (50-17) a 7-6 lead. Daniel Pigott hit two homers, a two-run shot in the second inning and a solo homer in the eighth.

• South Carolina returns to World Series: In Columbus, S.C., defending national champion South Carolina is heading back to the College World Series after topping Connecticut 8-2.

Christian Walker’s home run in the eighth inning broke a 2-all tie and the Gamecocks turned three straight inning-ending double plays to win.

• California sweeps Dallas Baptist, advances: In Santa Clara, Calif., Chadd Krist homered and drove in three runs and California beat Dallas Baptist 6-2 to earn its first College World Series berth in 19 years.

Erik Johnson pitched six solid innings to help the Bears (37-21) sweep the Super Regional series after winning the opener 7-0 on Saturday.

• UC Irvine forces Game 3 with Virginia: Jordan Leyland’s two-run double to center with two out in the bottom of the eighth inning gave UC Irvine the lead and the Anteaters beat top-seeded Virginia 6-4 to force a third game in the Charlottesville (Va.) Super Regional.

• Seminoles clobber Aggies: Stuart Tapley hit two home runs and drove in five runs, Justin Gonzalez had a three-run homer and six RBIs and Florida State routed Texas A&M in Tallahassee, Fla., to force a third game.

Jayce Boyd hit his third home run in three game games for Florida State (46-18). He finished 4 for 4, drove in three runs and scored five times.

Wiggins victorious in Dauphine race

Cycling: Britain’s Bradley Wiggins held on to win the Criterium du Dauphine race in the Alps as Joaquim Rodriguez took the seventh and final stage at La Toussuire, France.

Wiggins finished with an overall time of 26:40:51. Cadel Evans of Australia was second, 1:26 behind, while Alexandre Vinokourov of Kazakhstan was another 23 seconds back in third.

Rodriguez, a 32-year-old Spaniard who also won Saturday’s stage, bolted out of the front pack within the last mile of the 73-mile ride from Pontcharra to the uphill finish at La Toussuire, finishing in 3 hours, 24 minutes, 30 seconds.

• Soler takes second stage in Switzerland: In Crans- Montana, Switzlerand, Juan Mauricio Soler won the second stage of the Tour of Switzerland to take the overall lead in the last major warmup for the Tour de France.

The Colombian climbing specialist broke clear in the final half mile to finish in 4 hours, 23 minutes, 20 seconds for the 87-mile mountain stage from Airolo to the Crans-Montana ski resort.

• Contador spokesman confirms Tour plans: In Barcelona, Spain, three-time Tour de France champion Alberto Contador will compete in this year’s cycling showcase despite an upcoming hearing that could result in a doping ban.

Contador spokesman Jacinto Vidarte confirmed to the Associated Press reports that the Spaniard will be at the start when the race begins July 2.

Wozniacki beats Safarova in final

Tennis: Top-ranked Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark won her second straight Sony Ericsson Open title Sunday, beating fourth-seeded Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic 6-1, 6-4 in the final at Copenhagen, Denmark.

Wozniacki did not lose a set all week in Copenhagen, and the 20-year-old Dane dominated from start to finish claiming her fifth WTA title of the year in front of a sellout home crowd at the indoor Farum Arena.

• Kohlschreiber wins Halle title: In Halle, Germany, Philipp Kohlschreiber captured his third ATP Tour title, winning an all-German match when Philipp Petzschner retired with back pain while trailing 7-6 (5), 2-0 in the Gerry Weber Open final.

The 27-year-old Petzschner said he hurt his back on the break point at 5-5 in the first set.

• Queen’s final postponed by rain until today: Andy Murray and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga will return to Queen’s Club today after persistent rain prevented any play in the final.

Mindful of the gloomy weather forecast, organizers had chosen to move up the match, but there was only a brief dry spell of about 30 minutes during the afternoon.

Audi wins 10th 24 Hours of Le Mans

Auto Racing: In Le Mans, France, Audi overcame two crashes and held off a charging Peugeot to win the 24 Hours of Le Mans, giving the German carmaker its 10th title at the renowned endurance race.

Andre Lotterer, Marcel Fassler and Benoit Treluyer drove the Audi No. 2 to victory, moving Audi into sole possession of second place for most victories at Le Mans behind Porsche with 16 titles.

Audi No. 2 completed 355 laps in 24 hours, leading the Peugeot No. 9 driven by Simon Pagenaud, Pedro Lamy and Sebastien Bourdais by 13.854 seconds.

• Button makes last-lap pass at Canadian Grand Prix: In Montreal, Jenson Button took advantage of a last-lap slide by Sebastian Vettel and passed the runaway points leader on the final trip down the backstretch to win the rain-soaked Canadian Grand Prix.

Jenson had fallen to 21st in the field after being penalized for a speed limit violation, but he worked his way through the field and sat less than 1 second behind Vettel entering the final lap. The rear of Vettel’s Red Bull car slipped out from under him on the second half of a chicane, and Button sped past him to take the checkered flag for McLaren.

Teaks North wins Monmouth feature

Miscellany: In Oceanport, N.J., Teaks North won a five-horse stretch battle to win the $250,000 Monmouth Stakes at Monmouth Park, beating Sleepless Knight by three-quarters of a length.

• Ryan, Twichell win 5k swim national titles: In Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Sean Ryan easily won the men’s 5-kilometer race at the USA Swimming Open Water National Championships, leading from start to finish, while Ashley Twichell narrowly avoided a mistake at the end to win the women’s event.

Ryan beat out Chip Peterson and Ryan Feeley, winning in a time of 53 minutes, 11.79 seconds.

Twichell almost missed the finishing chute entirely.
