In brief: Woodland clutch in win at Innisbrook

Golf: At Palm Harbor, Fla., Gary Woodland’s only par on the back nine Sunday gave him his first PGA Tour victory.

Woodland surged into the lead with birdies, fell back with consecutive bogeys and won the Transitions Championship with a 10-foot par on the final hole for a 4-under 67 and a one-shot victory over Webb Simpson.

Simpson, playing in the group behind Woodland, was in a similar spot behind the 18th green at Innisbrook. His chip went 20 feet by the hole and he failed to make the par putt. He closed with a 69.

The win sends the big-hitter from Kansas to the Masters.

• Webb wins LPGA Founders Cup: At Phoenix, Karrie Webb rallied to win the LPGA Founders Cup for her second straight victory, shooting a 6-under 66 to beat Brittany Lincicome and Paula Creamer by a stroke.

Webb won when Lincicome bogeyed the final hole, missing a 10-foot par putt.

Rangers score 4 in 3rd to top Penguins

NHL: Marian Gaborik and Ryan Callahan scored power-play goals 11 seconds apart as part of a four-goal third period and the visiting New York Rangers extended their winning streak to a season-high four games with a 5-2 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins.

New York’s Henrik Lundqvist made 38 saves in his 17th consecutive start despite being questionable with a stiff neck.

• Erat’s OT goal caps Predators win: Nashville rookie Blake Geoffrion scored three goals, including two 1:02 apart in the final three minutes of regulation, and Martin Erat completed the comeback 27 seconds into overtime as the visiting Predators stormed to a 4-3 victory over the Buffalo Sabres.

• Brodeur posts another shutout: David Clarkson scored twice and Martin Brodeur made 13 saves to earn his NHL-record 115th shutout as the visiting New Jersey Devils snapped a two-game slide with a 3-0 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Pistons lose despite Stuckey’s effort

NBA: Al Horford scored 18 points, Josh Smith and Joe Johnson each added 17, and Atlanta snapped a two-game skid with a 104-96 victory over the visiting Detroit Pistons.

Rodney Stuckey missed two jump shots in the final 1:14 but still led the Pistons with 22 points in a reserve role. Chris Wilcox added 18, and Greg Monroe scored 17 for Detroit.

• Lakers rally past Blazers: Kobe Bryant scored 10 of his 22 points in a dynamic fourth quarter, and the Los Angeles Lakers rallied from behind in the final three minutes to win 84-80 over the visiting Portland Trail Blazers.

Nicolas Batum scored 25 points for the Blazers.

• Bucks beat slumping Knicks: Carlos Delfino scored a career-high 30 points and Brandon Jennings finished an assist short of a triple-double to lead the Milwaukee Bucks to a 100-95 victory over the visiting New York Knicks.

• Bynum suspended two games: Los Angeles Lakers center Andrew Bynum has been suspended two games for his flagrant foul on Minnesota’s Michael Beasley.

Bynum was ejected Friday night during the fourth quarter of the Lakers’ 106-98 win over the Timberwolves after he turned his shoulder and sent Beasley crashing to the court in a mid-air collision when Beasley drove the lane.

• Nets’ Williams out 3 games: New Jersey Nets guard Deron Williams will miss at least three games because of an injured right wrist.

Nets coach Avery Johnson said the wrist will be re-evaluated after Williams sits out those games.

• Love leaves game with groin injury: Minnesota Timberwolves All-Star Kevin Love left the game against Sacramento with an injury to his left groin.

Love appeared to get injured early in the second period when he winced in pain.

Djokovic beats Nadal

Miscellany: Novak Djokovic beat top-ranked Rafael Nadal 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 to win the men’s BNP Paribas Open title at Indian Wells, Calif.

Djokovic improved to 18-0 on the season, including victories at the Australian Open and in Dubai last month. He will be in the No. 2 spot when the ATP rankings are released today.

Top-ranked Caroline Wozniacki defeated Marion Bartoli 6-1, 2-6, 6-3 to win the women’s title. Wozniacki won on her second match point when Bartoli’s backhand sailed beyond the baseline.

• Gillispie hired as basketball coach at Texas Tech: Texas Tech hired Billy Gillispie as the new men’s basketball coach, two seasons after he was fired at Kentucky.

Gillispie will be introduced Wednesday at a news conference, school athletics spokesman Blayne Beal said. Gillispie replaces Pat Knight, who was fired this month.

• White Sox tag Thornton as their closer: The Chicago White Sox have tagged Matt Thornton as their closer to replace departed free agent Bobby Jenks.

• Yale receives top seed in hockey tournament: Yale is the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA hockey tournament.

The Bulldogs beat Cornell to win the ECAC tournament Saturday night. They are joined by North Dakota, Boston College and Miami of Ohio as the top seeds in the bracket.

• Geneti sets LA Marathon record: At Santa Monica, Calif., Markos Geneti set a Los Angeles Marathon record in winning in his debut at 26.2 miles with a time of 2 hours, 6 minutes, 35 seconds. Buzunesh Deba won the women’s event to give Ethiopia a sweep.
