Sunday Locals: EWU goaltender honored by B.C. hockey league

Jason Greenwell from Spokane, a sophomore at Eastern Washington, was named Goaltender of the Month for October by the British Columbia Intercollegiate Hockey League.

As EWU opened its inaugural season in the BCIHL with an unbeaten October, Greenwell had a 2-0 record, a 2.0 goals-against average and a .952 save percentage.

Greenwell, the top goaltender in the KIJHL his final junior season in 2009 playing for the Fernie (B.C.) Ghostriders, divides time in goal for the Eagles with Cash Ulrich. A fellow sophomore who played his junior hockey for the Spokane Braves, Ulrich also has a 2-0 record and 2.00 GAA.

Bowling

Jesse Covington was center stage when the day started, but he took a back seat to Nik Gosselin when all the firing subsided at the Junior Bowlers Tour stop at River City Lanes in Post Falls last Sunday.

Covington got what turned out to be a high-scoring day started by rolling a perfect 300 in his first game to highlight a 946 four-game series and carried the hot hand through the second qualifying set to enter the final roll-off top seeded.

But Gosselin, the third seed in the finals, first beat Nick Harris then toppled Covington 230-210 to claim his first JBT championship. Harris finished third.

Anthony Stedeford, placed fourth, while Bryan Brown and Taylor Gamble tied for fifth. Stedeford and Gamble had tied for the fifth and final spot that necessitated a unique playoff to get the roll-off started.

Karl Fencl, with a 289 game and 917 series; Stedeford (919); and Gosselin (909) also had 900 series. Heather Lundgren was high for the girls with a 246.

The next JBT is Nov. 20 at North Bowl.
