Lewis & Clark ends Whitworth’s dominance with victory

Whitworth’s 12-game winning streak over Lewis & Clark came to an end Saturday as the Pioneers beat the Pirates 30-22 in a Northwest Conference football game at Griswold Stadium in Portland.

Lewis & Clark improved to 5-0 on the season, the first time the Pioneers have done that since 1963. They’re also 2-0 in conference play for the first time since 1990.

The Pirates opened the scoring less than 4 minutes into the game when Bryan Peterson threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to Austin Ehlo.

Then Lewis & Clark grabbed control with 17 unanswered points in the second quarter.

Keith Welch ran for 149 yards and scored two touchdowns to lead the Pioneers.

For Whitworth (1-5, 0-2), Ronnie Thomas gained 96 rushing yards and Sean Scott and Zac Hill ran for touchdowns.

Whitworth hosts Pacific on Saturday.

Willamette 49, Puget Sound 31: The Bearcats (3-3, 2-1) scored the first 28 points of the game and eased past the Loggers (0-6, 0-3) in a Northwest Conference game at Baker Stadium in Tacoma.

Jake Turner and Dylan Jones had two rushing touchdowns apiece for Willamette.

Humboldt State 30, Central Washington 20: The Lumberjacks (6-0, 4-0) scored 23 unanswered points throughout the second and third quarters and clipped the Wildcats (2-4, 2-3) in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference contest at Tomlinson Stadium in Ellensburg.

Lewis and Clark High School graduate Levi Taylor scored on a 1-yard run in the second quarter for Central Washington, which fell to a conference opponent at home for the first time since the league’s inception in 2001.

Carroll 30, Rocky Mountain 7: Chance Demarais ran for 169 yards and two touchdowns to guide the Fighting Saints (6-1, 5-1) past the Batllin’ Bears (4-3, 3-3) in a Frontier Conference game in Helena.

Pacific Lutheran 14, Menlo 6: Kyle Warner’s 2-yard touchdown reception from Jack Halverson right before halftime proved to be the difference as the Lutes (4-1) beat the Oaks in Puyallup.
