West Valley, Cheney advance in girls district soccer

Kaylee Tate opened the scoring at 19 minutes and set up West Valley’s third goal just before halftime Thursday as the fourth-seeded Eagles (12-4) rolled past visiting Clarkston 6-1 in a District 7 2A girls soccer loser-out match.

Tate’s goal came from the right wing near the goal after some build-up passing.

WV made it 2-0 when Brittni Mauro headed in Haley Gronenthal’s crossing pass at 25 minutes.

WV freshman Kat Knorr fell just shy of the shutout when Katelyn Sly scored at 68 minutes for the fifth-seeded Bantams (3-11).

The Eagles swept Clarkston during the Great Northern League season, winning 3-0 and 4-0.

WV will play at No. 1 Pullman (12-4) at noon Saturday for a berth to regionals. The district title match and the match for the third seed to regionals are Tuesday at Gonzaga Prep.

Elsewhere, Chae Brown scored the first two goals, at 37 and 43 minutes, as third-seeded Cheney (10-7) rolled to a 6-2 win that eliminated visiting Deer Park (5-11).

Cheney plays at No. 2 East Valley (11-6) at noon Saturday for a berth in the title match and automatic regional spot.

• Ryen Nicholas assisted on Emily Lewis’ goal at 30 minutes and added a goal at 55 minutes as top-seeded Newport (15-2) defeated visiting Colville 2-0 to open the District 7 1A tournament.

The Grizzlies qualified for regionals and will meet Lakeside (Nine Mile Falls) at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Gonzaga Prep for the district title and regional seeding.

Before the Newport-Lakeside match, Colville (7-8) will play Freeman in a loser-out match for the No. 3 berth to regionals.

At Lakeside, Ashley Cook-Cox scored her team-leading 19th goal and assisted on Cassy Brown’s goal as the second-seeded Eagles (8-6) rallied to defeat the Scotties (6-5).

Sierra McGarity scored at 7 minutes for Freeman, but Allie McCann responded 4 minutes later. McCann chipped in an 18-yard shot from the outside wing.

Cross country

Colfax senior Morgan Willson dominated the girls field at the District 7/9 2B/1B meet at Beach View Park in Clarkston.

Willson completed the 3 miles in 17 minutes, 7.49 seconds, finishing more than 2 minutes ahead of Reardan freshman Harley Strope.

Northwest Christian junior Anna Henry (19:26.36) placed third, followed by St. John-Endicott/LaCrosse-Washtucna sophomore Heather Siegel (19:42.87) and St. George’s junior Taryn Stamper (19:53.84).

Asotin (66 points) won the team race, 18 points ahead of Reardan. Tri-Cities Prep (85) edged NWC for the final berth to state.

TCP (22 points) dominated the boys race with seven runners in the top 10. Asotin (41) and Pomeroy (76) also made state.

Waitsburg junior Seth Deal (15:30.75) topped Asotin senior Chase Teigen by 4 seconds for first place.

The top three teams and top 15 individuals advance to state.
