Area roundup: Grow’s goal lifts Whits
Mackenzie Grow scored 48 seconds into overtime as Whitworth beat Lewis and Clark College 3-2 Sunday in Northwest Conference play in Spokane.
Carly Schilperoot and Katrin Grant also found the back of the net for the Pirates (8-5-4, 8-3-4 NWC), who saw five seniors play their final home match – Anisa Babar, Sarah Berentson, Callie Bergstrom, Cory Druffel and Allie Smith.
Whitworth concludes the regular season Friday at Willamette.
• Tiara Pittman and Brandi Vega scored in the first half to lead Washington State to a 2-0 victory over Arizona in Pac-12 play in Tucson, Ariz. The Cougars (12-6-2, 6-3-1 Pac-12) close their regular season Thursday against Washington in Seattle.
• Eastern Washington ended its season with a 5-0 loss to Seattle University in Cheney. Seniors Whitney Brannan, Dashia Huff, Kirsten Fausko and Melanie Kitsman played their final game for the Eagles (2-13-1).
• Sierra Cook scored in the 80th minute to give Arizona State a 1-0 Pac-12 victory over Washington (7-8-4, 3-5-2 Pac-12) in Tempe, Ariz.
Men’s soccer
Taylor Willi scored twice as Whitworth beat Willamette 6-1 in a Northwest Conference match in Spokane.
Dion Coxe, Anders Nostdahl, Sam Selisch and Matt Miller also scored for the Pirates (13-3-1, 11-2 NWC), who close out the regular season Saturday at home against Whitman.
• Saint Mary’s scored three unanswered goals to erase a 2-0 deficit and beat Gonzaga 3-2 in West Coast Conference action in Spokane.
Colin Flynn and Zach Hamer scored less than a minute apart in the first half for the Bulldogs (4-9-2, 2-5-1 WCC), who played the final 22 minutes a man short after Flynn was given a red card for a spikes-high tackle.
Gonzaga plays at San Diego on Friday and at Loyola Marymount on Sunday.
• Jacob Hustedt scored twice and Charlie Ranahan also found the back of the net as Washington beat San Diego State 3-0 in a Pac-12 match in San Diego. The Huskies (11-4-2, 6-3 Pac-12) close out the regular season Nov. 11 against Oregon State in Seattle.
Volleyball
Gabbi Parker recorded a career-high 11 kills as 10th-ranked Washington swept Arizona in Pac-12 play in Seattle. Jenna Orlandini had 20 digs for the Huskies (18-4, 10-4 Pac-12), who won 25-15, 25-21, 25-22.
Rowing
Washington State’s women’s rowing team swept all six races this weekend at the Portland LO/OP and Portland Fall Classic.
In Saturday’s LO/OP, the Cougars won the Championships 8+ and took the first two places in the Collegiate 8+. Gonzaga finished second in the Championships 8+ and took third and fourth places behind WSU in the Collegiate 8+.
In Sunday’s Fall Classic, the Cougars won the Varsity 8+, Second Varsity 8+, Varsity 4+ and Junior Varsity 4+, while WSU’s B boat finished third in the Second Varsity 8+. Gonzaga finished second in the Varsity 4+ and Junior Varsity 4+ races and third in the Varsity 8+ race. In the Second Varsity 8+, Gonzaga’s A boat finished fourth and the B boat finished fifth.
• Gonzaga’s men’s rowing team was also busy in Portland, winning all three races at Saturday’s LO/OP, and earning two first-place finishes at Sunday’s Fall Classic.
The Junior Varsity 8+ and Novice 8+ boats were the Sunday winners, while the Varsity 8+ boat came in second. In the Varsity 4+ race, the Gonzaga B boat finished fourth and the A boat finished fifth.
