Iron Manning will miss start, ending streak
NFL: Peyton Manning has compiled 227 consecutive starts quarterbacking the Indianapolis Colts every game since Sept. 6, 1998.
He won’t this weekend.
Manning will be in street clothes when the team opens the season at Houston, still recovering neck surgery on May 23 to repair a nerve in his neck. Kerry Collins will start in his place.
The streak is the second longest in history among NFL quarterbacks behind only Brett Favre (297).
Colts left tackle Anthony Castonzo was 10 years old when Manning’s streak began.
“To say I am disappointed in not being able to play is an understatement,” Manning said in a release from the team.
Giants QB Eli Manning now holds the longest current streak at 110 starts.
Four secure berths at Olympic qualifier
Basketball: In Mar Del Plata, Argentina, Puerto Rico defeated Canada 79-74, Argentina overpowered Venezuela 111-93, Brazil beat Panama 90-65 and the Dominican Republic defeated Uruguay 84-76 to secure berths in Saturday’s semifinals of the Olympic basketball qualifying tournament for the Americas.
• UW’s Gaddy cleared to return: Washington guard Abdul Gaddy has been cleared to return to action with no limitations nine months after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.
Weather puts damper on U.S. Open
Tennis: Rafael Nadal, Andy Roddick and Andy Murray got in about 15 minutes of tennis – barely enough to work up a sweat – before rain washed out the matches for the second straight day at the U.S. Open.
The U.S. Tennis Association is calling for an 11 a.m. start today, when the weather forecast is every bit as dodgy – an 80 percent chance of rain.
Experts say former boxer Gatti murdered
Miscellany: Former junior welterweight champion Arturo Gatti was murdered two years ago in Brazil, a panel of forensic evidence experts said as it presented the results of a 10-month investigation initiated to challenge the official version that Gatti committed suicide.
“This case must be reopened if authorities in Brazil have an iota of moral, ethical and legal concern for their reputation,” said noted forensic pathologist Cyril Wecht, who termed the version produced by the initial criminal investigation “pure, unadulterated fiction.”
• Olympian accused of assault: Olympic gymnastics champion Paul Hamm has been accused of hitting and kicking a taxi driver in Upper Arlington, Ohio, damaging a cab window and refusing to pay a $23 fare.
He’s charged with assault and two other misdemeanors.
• Condit to replace Diaz at UFC 137: Carlos Condit will face UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre at UFC 137 in Las Vegas on Oct. 29 after contender Nick Diaz failed to show up for promotional duties this week.
• NASCAR back in Rockingham: NASCAR will return to Rockingham (N.C.) Speedway for the first time since 2004 when the Truck Series holds the Camping World Truck Series event on April 15.
• Phillies denied protest for lost game: Following a review, the Philadelphia Phillies have been denied their protest for a fan interference call – originally called a Hunter Pence double – in a 5-4, 14-inning loss to the Florida Marlins on Sunday.
