Morning sun to change to clouds, showers

Sunshine at daybreak is not going to last long as a new weather system approaches Northeast Washington and North Idaho. Clouds will be on the increase through the day with a chance of showers developing this afternoon, especially to the west of Colville and westward to the Cascades. The chance of rain in Spokane and Coeur d’Alene is 20 percent today with highs in the middle to upper 60s. Breezy south winds of 10 to 20 mph are possible. As much as a tenth of an inch of rain could accumulate today, making it the first substantial rain in weeks. The chance of rain increases to 50 percent tonight from a wave of moisture moving into the region ahead of an offshore cold front. A quarter of an inch of rain is possible tonight. National Weather Service forecasters said the highest probability of rain is to the west and north of Spokane. Lows tonight should stay mild in the middle 40s to middle 50s. A weak cold front crosses the region on Tuesday, continuing the chance of rain showers, but daytime highs should reach the upper 60s to lower 70s, which is normal for late September. Higher air pressure returns to the region by the middle of the week. Wednesday will still be in the 60s, but Thursday and Friday could see highs well into the 70s. Temperatures should drop some by the weekend, but remain seasonably mild.
