Texas completes sweep of Mariners
ARLINGTON, Texas – The Seattle Mariners are done on the road after matching the slugging A.L. West champion Texas Rangers.
Even though the Mariners hit four home runs Sunday, the same as Texas, that again wasn’t nearly enough in a 12-5 loss before going home to finish the regular season.
“We’re not in that game yet,” manager Eric Wedge said. “They’ve got a tremendous lineup.”
Seattle got solo homers from Chris Gimenez, Mike Carp and Kyle Seager and a two-run shot from Alex Liddi.
Yorvit Torrealba homered in consecutive innings for Texas, a solo shot in the sixth and a grand slam in the seventh that stretched the lead to 11-4. Adrian Beltre and Ian Kinsler both hit long homers for Texas off left-hander Charlie Furbush (4-10).
“They’re one of the better teams in baseball. They got me with the long ball,” Furbush said.
Kinsler’s two-run shot to left-center in the third snapped a 1-1 tie and put Texas ahead to stay before Mike Napoli added an RBI single later in the inning. It was the 31st homer for Kinsler, equaling a career high for the Rangers’ leadoff hitter.
Beltre led off the second with his 30th homer, hitting the ninth pitch he got onto the hill in straightaway center. It was his 10th homer in his past 13 games.
Seattle, which finishes the season at home with a three-game series against Oakland, was 4-15 against the Rangers this season.
“This is not a team you want to go into a long-ball contest with. This team, in this park, they don’t miss,” Gimenez said.
With the three-game sweep, Texas matched a franchise record with its 52nd win at home.
Felix says he’s fine
That dark bruise a few inches about Felix Hernandez’s right wrist has plenty of time to heal.
The Seattle ace said he’s OK a day after taking a liner off his forearm in his last scheduled start of the season. He displayed the bruise Sunday.
When Hernandez was asked when he’d be able to throw again, he responded, “I don’t need to throw anymore.”
