Greek dinner set to start Thursday

It is the last day to buy discounted advance tickets for the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church’s 76th Greek Festival.

Church members have been busy preparing the traditional tastes of Greek culture for the annual dinner, which will be held Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Dinner seating begins at 4:30 p.m. each day, featuring a meal of beef kapama, braised in a Greek spiced tomato sauce, and orzo pasta tossed with browned butter and Mizithra cheese. Advance tickets are $12 ($6 for children younger than 12).

Souvlakia – Greek shish kebabs – are also available from the grill each day, along with salads. Don’t miss the pastries, coffee, wine, beer, appetizers, deli and dancing.

Lunch is served 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday and Friday. The grill opens at 4:30 p.m. and Saturday at noon.

Advance tickets are available today at the church, 1703 N. Washington St.; City Ramp Parking Garage, 430 W. First Ave.; Santorini Greek Restaurant, 112 N. Howard St.; Arger Real Estate, 300 N. Mullen Road, Suite 204; and in Coeur d’Alene at The Olympia Restaurant, 301 E. Lakeside Ave., and Santorini’s Greek Cuisine, 4055 N. Government Way.

Crush Rush 2011 kicks off

Spokane wineries are hosting their second Crush Rush through Oct. 23.

Download a list of scavenger hunt items at a map at crushrushspokane.com. Gather four of the items on the list and have someone from the winery sign the form. Drop a completed entry off at any of the wineries by Oct. 23 for a chance to win a private wine-tasting event for eight on Oct. 30.

Links to each of the local wineries, including hours and special events, can be found at www.spokane wineries.net.

Get small

I can’t wait to try making one of the bitty treats in Dani Cone’s cookbook, “Cutie Pies: 40 Sweet, Savory and Adorable Recipes.”

The book from McMeel Publishing ($16.99) hits bookstore shelves this weekend. Cone, the founder and owner of Fuel Coffee and High 5 Pie, dishes on the recipes that have made her minipastries popular in Seattle.

The book is arranged by minipie shape, including single-serving pies baked in a muffin tin, handheld turnovers, pie lollipops and little pies baked in canning jars.

Look inside today’s section for the recipe for Pear-Cranberry- Ginger Cutie Pies.
