In brief: Council candidates to talk at forum

SPOKANE VALLEY – Everyone running for Spokane Valley City Council is scheduled to take part in a forum today from 7 to 9 p.m. at CenterPlace, 2426 N. Discovery Place. The forum is being hosted by the Greater Spokane Valley Chamber of Commerce.

All candidates in contested races will answer questions; candidates in uncontested races have been invited to set up displays, said Chamber President Eldonna Shaw.

The debate is open to the public.

Class emphasizes safe driving skills

SPOKANE VALLEY – The Good Samaritan Society Community Center, 17121 E. Eighth Ave., will hold an AARP Driver Safety Program on Oct. 26, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Participants will have an opportunity to learn defensive driving techniques, new traffic laws and rules of the road; how to deal with aggressive drivers; how to safely use anti-lock brakes, air bags and safety belts; and how to handle situations such as left turns, right of way, Interstate Highway traffic, trucks and blind spots.

Cost is $12 for AARP members and $14 for nonmembers.

End of season for Heritage Gardens

CLIFF/CANNON – The Friends of the Moore-Turner Heritage Gardens, located in Edwidge Woldson Park, 507 W. Seventh Ave., will “Put the Gardens to Bed” on Oct. 7 from 5 to 8 p.m.

The event will feature “The Neighborhood in the Time,” a historic overview of Seventh Avenue at the turn of the 20th century, a presentation by Linda Yeomans. The program will be held at the Corbin Art Center.

Cost is $20, which includes a $10 Friends membership.

Weather service to hold open house

SPOKANE COUNTY – The National Weather Service Spokane, 2601 N. Rambo Road, will have an open house Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The event is a precursor to the new Dual-Pol upgrade, which will take place beginning Oct. 10.

Workshop teaches conservation skills

EAST CENTRAL – Spokane Urban Forestry will have a NeighborWoods program for local residents looking to conserve water, manage stormwater, enhance developments and/or residential lots and learn about low-impact development.

The workshop will be Oct. 8 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Spokane Conservation District, 210 N. Havana St. The event is free and open to the public, but preregistration is required, as space is limited to 35 people. Brew festival set for MS society

FAIRGROUNDS – The Inland Northwest OctoBrewFest to benefit the National Multiple Sclerosis Society will be Oct. 15 at the Fair and Expo Center, 404 N. Havana Ave. Doors open at 5:30 p.m.

Eat, drink and bid at the 16th annual festival that will include microbrews, wines, draft root beer and an auction. Items include artwork, microbrew and wine tastings, jewelry, air-land-sea adventures, autographed collectibles by sports celebrities, golf packages and gift certificates.

Tickets are $13 in advance or $15 at the door. Admission includes four beer sample tokens and a commemorative mug. Additional tokens are $1 each. Food is available from David’s Pizza and Azar’s.

Event focuses on aging safely

SPOKANE COUNTY – Fairwood Retirement Village, 312 W. Hastings Road, Family Home Care and the Spokane Health District Fall Prevention Committee will host a Stay on Your Feet information event on Oct. 11 at 2 p.m.

The presentation is designed to provide information on aging safely in one’s home.
