In brief: Five killed, 13 hurt in motor home crash

From Wire Reports

LYNDON, Kan. – A packed motor home headed from Texas to Minnesota crashed Sunday morning in northeast Kansas, killing five people and sending 13 others to hospitals.

The Kansas Highway Patrol said the northbound vehicle was filled with 18 people and pulling a trailer when the driver lost control at 9 a.m. on Interstate 35. The vehicle hit a guardrail and a concrete bridge rail before crashing into a creek ravine near the small town of Williamsburg, which is located about 70 miles southwest of Kansas City, Mo. Debris was strewn around the crumpled Freightliner box truck, which had living quarters inside.

Trooper Don Hughes said the fatality victims included adults and children. The crash is under investigation.

Visa blames outage on system update

WASHINGTON – A technical problem affecting the Visa network barred some people around the United States from using their credit and debit cards for about 45 minutes on Sunday, the company said.

The outage was caused by a recent update Visa has made to its system, said Visa Inc. spokeswoman Sandra Chu. She said Visa had trouble processing some transactions as a result, but the system is operating normally now.

Chu said the problem Sunday was unrelated to the security breach potentially affecting Visa and MasterCard customers that was reported Friday by credit card processor Global Payments Inc.

The outage occurred from around 11:40 a.m. to 1:20 p.m. PDT, a person from a major bank said. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because bank employees were not authorized to speak publicly.

Romney rivals differ on supporting him

WASHINGTON – Mitt Romney’s rivals are split on whether they would ever embrace the GOP presidential front-runner if he were the party’s nominee.

Ron Paul says he hasn’t decided what position he’ll take come summer, when the nominee will presumably be decided.

Newt Gingrich says he’d have no choice but to embrace Romney – whom he once called a “liar” – because Romney would still be a “dramatically better president” than President Barack Obama.

Rick Santorum says he’s still focused on beating Romney, whom he accuses of leading a negative attack campaign.

Paul and Gingrich spoke on CBS’ “Face the Nation.” Santorum was on “Fox News Sunday” and NBC’s “Meet the Press.”
