Hired The Washington Wizards hired former NBA player and coach Jerry Sichting as an assistant coach Thursday. Sichting played 10 seasons for five teams in the NBA and worked as an assistant coach for Minnesota and Golden State. With the Timberwolves for 11 seasons, Sichting worked under Wizards head coach Randy Wittman for two campaigns when Wittman held the same role in Minnesota.

Withdrew Andy Murray withdrew from the Rogers Cup because of a knee injury, the latest top player to pull out of the rain-delayed tournament. The Olympic gold medalist hurt his left knee Wednesday night during the opening match against Flavio Cipolla. Murray was scheduled to face Canadian Milos Raonic in the third round.

Rafael Nadal dropped out of the Western & Southern Open because of a knee problem that also forced him to miss the Olympics.

Suspended Montreal Impact defender Nelson Rivas has been suspended two additional games by Major League Soccer for headbutting an opponent. Rivas was sent off for headbutting Philadelphia’s Antoine Hoppenot on Saturday, and the red card carries an automatic one-game suspension.

Charged Oklahoma State defensive tackle Christian Littlehead has been charged with misdemeanor assault and battery, and a warrant has been issued for his arrest. The district attorney’s office in Cherokee County filed the charge against Littlehead after a woman reported to police that Littlehead punched her in the face and knocked her down at a party in March.

Announced Clemson athletic director Terry Don Phillips announced his retirement after leading the Tigers for 10 years. Phillips plans to stay around until a nationwide search for his replacement is finished.

Arrested Former NFL wide receiver Sam Hurd was arrested in San Antonio after federal officials say he tested positive for marijuana use.
