One dead in accident on North Newport Highway

From staff reports
A 59-year-old Spokane man was killed in a collision this morning between a motorcycle and a commercial vehicle 16 miles north of Spokane on Newport Highway. John C. Sanderson was pronounced dead at the scene, the Washington State Patrol reported. Sanderson was driving his 1994 Honda motorcycle north on Newport Highway near the intersection with Bailey Road around 9:20 Friday morning. Garry D. Baumgartner, Jr., 37, of Valleyford, was also headed north and had stopped his 1993 Ford utility truck along the shoulder of the road, attempting to make a U-turn, the WSP said. Sanderson’s motorcycle hit the truck broadside. Baumgartner was taken to Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center. He was not wearing a seat belt, the news release said. Sanderson was wearing a helmet. The cause of the accident was listed as failure to yield the roadway. Charges are pending, the WSP said.
