Briscoe holds off Power to win at Sonoma
Auto racing: Ryan Briscoe got past teammate Will Power out of a pit stop Sunday and held off the two-time defending Sonoma champion for his seventh career IndyCar victory, capping a masterful weekend in Sonoma Calif., for Chevrolet and Penske Racing.
Chevrolet clinched the manufacturers’ championship in the first season of its return to IndyCar with six of its cars in the top 10 – including another dominant performance by the Penske team, which took three of the top six spots.
“To see them win the manufacturers’ championship in their first year is very rewarding,” owner Roger Penske said.
And even with his frustrating second-place finish, Power took command of the overall championship race when his three closest competitors all had problems. Power increased his lead to 36 points over Ryan Hunter-Reay heading to Baltimore next weekend.
American Jeter tops Fraser-Pryce in 100M
Track and Field: American Carmelita Jeter beat London 2012 gold medalist Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce of Jamaica in the women’s 100-meter final in a time of 10.81 seconds at the Aviva Grand Prix Diamond League meet in Birmingham, England.
Fraser-Pryce was 0.09 behind Jeter, the silver medalist at the London Games, with Alexandria Anderson of the United States third, 0.41 behind.
Sky overcome Sun to snap nine-game skid
Women’s basketball: Epiphanny Prince scored 15 points and the Chicago Sky snapped a nine-game losing streak with an 82-70 victory over the Connecticut Sun in Uncasville, Conn.
Former Gonzaga star Courtney Vandersloot had 11 assists for Chicago.
• U.S. women win first 3-on-3 world title: The United States women’s team won the inaugural 3-on-3 world basketball championship in Athens, Greece, beating France 17-16 in the final.
Notre Dame senior Skylar Diggins, Connecticut junior Bria Hartley and Stanford junior Chiney Ogwumike teamed with former UConn standout Ann Strother for the U.S. team. The Americans went 9-0 but were pushed hard by Australia in the semifinals earlier Sunday, winning 19-18.
Serbia won the men’s title with a 16-13 victory over France. The U.S. men were eliminated by Serbia in the quarterfinals.
No. 24 Broncos name Southwick starter
College football: Joe Southwick has been chosen to start at quarterback for No. 24 Boise State when they open the season against No. 13 Michigan State on Friday night.
The junior is 40 for 54 for 400 yards with two touchdown passes in his career at Boise State. Sophomore Grant Hedrick is listed as the backup.
• Irish suspend RB Wood: Notre Dame suspended starting tailback Cierre Wood two games for violating team rules, leaving the Fighting Irish without their 1,000-yard rusher against Navy in Dublin, Ireland, on Sept. 1 and the home opener the following Saturday against Purdue. Coach Brian Kelly also revealed that junior defensive end Justin Utupo was suspended for the first two games.
Vande Velde wins USA Pro Challenge
Cycling: Christian Vande Velde won the overall title in the USA Pro Challenge, finishing second behind Taylor Phinney in the closing time trial in Denver.
Tejay van Garderen of Bozeman, Mont., was second overall – 21 seconds back – after finishing third in the time trial. Levi Leipheimer, last year’s winner, was ninth in the final stage and third overall – 24 seconds behind.
• Gilbert takes ninth Vuelta stage: Belgian cyclist Philippe Gilbert won the ninth stage of the Spanish Vuelta in Barcelona, Spain, just in front of Joaquin Rodriguez of Spain.
Rodriguez extended his overall lead over Christopher Froome and Alberto Contador.
Love and Pride wins Personal ensign
Horse racing: Love and Pride held off heavily favored Royal Delta by a half-length in the $600,000 Personal Ensign Invitational Handicap at Saratoga Race Course.
Ridden by John Velazquez and trained by Todd Pletcher, Love and Pride ran 1 1/8 miles in 1:49.22 and paid $22, $6.70 and $3.50 for her third victory in seven starts this season.
• Dullahan upsets Game on Dude: Dullahan overcame 6-5 favorite Game On Dude in the stretch to win the $1 million Pacific Classic at Del Mar (Calif.) by a half-length.
Kuwait national team coach shot in Serbia
Soccer: Police say Kuwait national team soccer coach Goran Tufegdzic has been shot in his native Serbia and is in critical condition.
Police in the central town of Pozarevac said that Tufegdzic was shot on Friday in the chest by his neighbor after an argument over a plot of land. He was taken to a Belgrade hospital in serious condition.
• Galaxy beat FC Dallas on late goals: Juninho and Todd Dunivant scored second-half goals to help the Los Angeles Galaxy beat FC Dallas 2-0 in Carson, Calif.
• Kamara leads Sporting KC to draw: Sporting Kansas City’s Kei Kamara delivered on a brilliant header in the opening minutes and then gave it back with an own-goal moments later for the only scoring in a 1-1 draw with the New York Red Bulls in Kansas City, Kan.
