Chamberlain’s basket catapults Bears

Adam Chamberlain made a free throw with 1 second left as the visiting Central Valley Bears completed a big second-half rally to upend the University Titans 54-53 in Greater Spokane League boys basketball action Tuesday.

Chamberlain picked up a loose ball with 3 seconds to go and drove to the basket when he was fouled. He then stole a pass to seal the win.

Beau Byus led the Bears (4-0 overall, 3-0 league) with 19 points, 11 coming in the second half as CV overcame a 36-24 halftime deficit. Chamberlain had 15.

CV didn’t take its first lead until 2 minutes, 31 seconds remained.

Brett Bailey led U-Hi (3-1, 2-1) with 20 points, while Joseph Carrieres scored 14.

Gonzaga Prep 67, Lewis and Clark 27: The Bullpups (3-1, 3-0) throttled the visiting Tigers (3-2, 1-2).

And they did it with defense. G-Prep held the Tigers to 12 points in the first half, then outscored LC 39-15 in the final two periods.

Jacob Groh and Ryan Alexander had 17 points apiece to lead G-Prep.

Mead 79, North Central 35: The Panthers (4-1, 2-1), 4-16 a year ago, are making the most of a fast start.

The Panthers opened a 24-9 lead over the visiting Indians (0-5, 0-3) in the first quarter and outscored NC 19-2 in the final period.

Mead shot 55 percent from the field.

“It’s ridiculous how the ball’s going in right now,” Mead coach Glenn Williams said.

Thomas Kautzman led Mead with 16 points and seven rebounds. Teammates Walker Pettis and William McPhee added 14 and 12, respectively. Jamil Foster scored nine for NC.

Ferris 74, Mt. Spokane 51: The Saxons made a fast start hold up by adding a punctuation mark in the fourth quarter.

The Saxons (3-1, 2-1) opened a 36-25 lead in the first half and then outscored the Wildcats (2-2, 1-2) 22-9 in the final period.

Cody Benzel led Ferris with 24 points, Matt Belles had 12 and Cole Karstetter added 11. Jensen Rye had 10 points to go with eight rebounds.

Stu Stiles led Mt. Spokane with 16 points.

Shadle Park 73, Rogers 63: The Highlanders (2-3, 1-2) broke open a one-point game by outscoring the visiting Pirates (1-3, 0-3) 31-22 in the fourth quarter.

Four Highlanders finished in double-figure scoring. Skyler Kelley and George Pilimai had 15 each, Alvin Welch had 11 and Morgan Barnes added 10. Amaujae Daniels led Rogers with 27.
