In brief: McAfee touches down in Miami after deportation

Miami – Anti-virus software founder John McAfee arrived in the U.S. on Wednesday night after being deported from Guatemala, where he had sought to evade police questioning in the killing of a man in neighboring Belize.

The American Airlines commercial jet carrying McAfee landed in Miami shortly before 7 p.m.

McAfee’s expulsion from Guatemala marked the last chapter in a strange, monthlong odyssey to avoid police questioning about the November killing of American expatriate Gregory Viant Faull, who lived a couple of houses down from McAfee’s compound on Ambergris Caye, off Belize’s Caribbean coast.

He was in hiding in Belize for weeks after police pronounced him a person of interest in the killing. Belizean authorities have urged him to show up for questioning, but have not lodged any charges against him.

‘Fast and Furious’ gun buyer sentenced to five years

Phoenix – A federal judge sentenced a Phoenix man Wednesday to nearly five years in prison for purchasing firearms for a Mexican drug cartel, triggering a chain of events that included the death of an elite Border Patrol agent and the unraveling of the failed federal gun-tracking operation called “Fast and Furious.”

Jaime Avila Jr., 25, was a “straw purchaser” of the firearms for the cartel and his purchases included two rifles found at the scene of the death of Border Patrol Agent Brian A. Terry, who died two years ago in the desert south of Tucson.

Avila purchased 52 firearms over 10 months. Federal Judge James A. Teilborg sentenced Avila to 57 months in prison, for what he called running “weapons of war.”

Baby welcomed into world at 12:12 on 12-12-12 in Boston

Boston – With a little help from her mother, Noelle Joy Klinker started life as a happy coincidence.

The newborn’s parents welcomed her into the world at 12:12 p.m. on 12-12-12 after her mother was in labor for about 12 hours.

Weighing 9 pounds and one ounce, the 21.5-inch-long infant was born Wednesday at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston to parents Colleen and Joe Klinker.

Her proud papa, a 31-year-old Coast Guard lieutenant, said the timing was mostly a coincidence. At 12:11 p.m., Colleen Klinker saved the final push until the clock ticked to a minute later.
