Bulls hold off Knicks behind Rose’s 32
NBA: Derrick Rose scored 32 points to outduel fellow All-Star starter Carmelo Anthony, and the Chicago Bulls beat the New York Knicks 105-102 Thursday night in New York.
Rose had 15 in the fourth quarter and repeatedly answered when the Knicks tried to put together a rally.
Stoudemire had 34 points and 11 rebounds but missed a 3-pointer that would have tied the game with 10 seconds left.
• Kings extend Blazers’ road woes: Marcus Thornton scored 20 points and John Salmons had a season-high 19 as the Kings heat the Portland Trail Blazers 95-92 in Sacramento, Calif.
LaMarcus Aldridge had 28 points and 14 rebounds for the Blazers, who have lost four straight on the road
• L.A.-heavy All-Star roster revealed: Blake Griffin and Andrew Bynum were voted to the All-Star game, joining Kobe Bryant and Chris Paul to give the city of Los Angeles four starters.
Oklahoma City’s Kevin Durant kept the West from being entirely an L.A. story by earning a forward spot for the Feb. 26 game in Orlando, Fla.
Dwight Howard of the host Magic was the leading vote-getter with 1.6 million. LeBron James, Dwyane Wade from Miami, MVP Derrick Rose of Chicago and New York’s Carmelo Anthony round out the East starters.
Starters were chosen by fan balloting. The reserves will be chosen by voting of the head coaches from each conference and will be announced Thursday.
Wellwood nets Jets’ overtime winner
NHL: Kyle Wellwood scored 3:14 into overtime to lead the Winnipeg Jets past the Lightning 2-1 in Tampa, Fla.
Blake Wheeler also scored for the Jets, who had lost seven straight games at Tampa Bay dating to the team’s days in Atlanta. Ondrej Pavelec finished with 30 saves.
• Gagner gets rare eight-point outing: Sam Gagner had four goals and four assists in the NHL’s first eight-point game in 23 years, and the Oilers beat the Chicago Blackhawks 8-4 in Edmonton, Alberta.
Canaan helps Murray State stay perfect
Men’s basketball: Isaiah Canaan scored 32 points and No. 10 Murray State (22-0, 10-0) remained unbeaten with an 81-73 win over Southeast Missouri State (12-10, 7-3) in Murray, Ky.
Jewuan Long added 13 points for Murray State, which is off to the best start by an Ohio Valley Conference team since Western Kentucky opened 21-0 in 1953-54.

Women’s basketball: Lindsey Moore scored eight of her 26 points in the third overtime session, including two 3-pointers, and No. 16 Nebraska (19-3, 8-2) beat 15th-ranked Purdue (18-5, 8-2) 93-89 in triple overtime in West Lafayette, Ind., to move into a first-place tie in the Big Ten.
• Pepperdine upsets No. 22 BYU: Lauren Bell scored a career-high 26 points, Kelsey Patrick had 13 and Pepperdine (11-10, 6-4 WCC) used a strong second half to upset No. 22 BYU 61-49 in Malibu, Calif., ending the Lady Cougars’ (20-4, 8-2) nine-game winning streak.
• Wildcat women match best start: Freshman Bria Goss scored 19 points and No. 6 Kentucky matched its best start in school history with an 82-41 victory over Mississippi in Lexington, Ky.
The Wildcats (21-2, 10-0 Southeastern Conference) equaled the 1982-83 team.
Kentucky forced Mississippi (12-11, 2-8) into 36 turnovers, the most in a conference game this season.
• Gamecocks find rare win over Tennessee: Markeshia Grant scored 27 points and South Carolina (18-5, 7-3 SEC) beat No. 8 Tennessee 64-60 in Knoxville, Tenn., for its first win over the Lady Volunteers (16-6, 7-2) since 1980.
Palmer leads delayed Phoenix Open
Golf: Ryan Palmer parred his final hole at dusk for a 7-under-par 64 and the lead in the suspended first round of the Phoenix Open.
The start of the round was delayed an hour because of frost, and play was suspended because of darkness at 6:05 p.m. with 42 players unable to finish. Last year, frost and frozen greens delayed play nine hours during the week, forcing a Monday finish.
• Mickelson files suit to find source of defamation: Phil Mickelson filed a lawsuit against Videotron S.E.N.C, an Internet service provider in Quebec, Canada to learn the identity of a person who has been posting “vexatious statements” that the four-time major champion says is a deliberate attack on his reputation.
• Lee leads Australian Masters: Lee Bo-mee of South Korea shot a 7-under 65 to take a one-stroke lead in the Australian Ladies Masters in Gold Coast, Australia.
American teenager Lexi Thompson had five birdies in an error-free round to sit two strokes off the pace with England’s Felicity Johnson, and Australians Nikki Campbell and Stephanie Na.
Manning medically cleared to return
Miscellany: Indianapolis Colts’ quarterback Peyton Manning has been medically cleared by two doctors to resume his NFL career, according to an ESPN report. The four-time MVP missed the 2011 season because of lingering problems from a third neck surgery during the past two years.
The report said Dr. Robert Watkins, who performed the latest surgery on Manning’s neck on Sept. 8, and Colts neurosurgeon Dr. Hank Feuer had cleared Manning to play again.
Colts owner Jim Irsay said he would meet soon with Manning, who turns 36 on March 24, to discuss the quarterback’s future. Manning is due a $28-million roster bonus in early March, and Irsay wants more medical information before then in order to decide whether to keep Manning or release him.
• Hamm struggles in return to competition: In his first competitive gymnastics meet since 2008, Olympic champion Paul Hamm failed to make it out of the first round.
Hamm struggled at the Winter Cup Challenge, scoring 15.4 on vault but failing to break 13.9 anywhere else, and didn’t finish among the top 42, meaning he won’t be asked back for Saturday night’s finals.
Regardless, as a three-time national titlist, Hamm will have a spot at nationals, which means there’s still a path to the Olympic team open for him.
• Rangers’ Hamilton relapses: The Dallas Morning News has reported Texas Rangers outfielder and recovering drug addict Josh Hamilton had a relapse earlier this week when he drank alcohol at a Dallas bar.
