Dallas defeats Vancouver in overtime

NHL: Loui Eriksson’s goal at 3:52 of overtime sent the Dallas Stars to their fourth consecutive victory, 3-2 over the Vancouver Canucks on Sunday in Dallas.

Steve Ott carried the puck deep in the Vancouver end and passed to Trevor Daley at the left circle. Eriksson skated to the net and fired Daley’s goal-mouth pass by Roberto Luongo.

Mike Ribeiro scored the tying goal for Dallas with 52.5 seconds left in regulation.

Vancouver holds the top spot in the Western Conference, while Dallas is clinging to the eighth and final playoff berth.

• Ortmeyer’s first goal a gem: Jed Ortmeyer’s first goal of the season gave the Minnesota Wild the lead with 4:13 left in a 4-3 victory in St. Paul, Minn., sending the San Jose Sharks home with a tough loss to finish 2-6-1 on a season-long nine-game road trip.

The Sharks played more than half of the night without coach Todd McLellan, who was inadvertently hit in the head with a stick during a play in front of the bench early in the second period. After staying down for a bit, McLellan walked gingerly to the locker room.

• Ducks fend off Blackhawks: Teemu Selanne scored a power-play goal and had an assist to move into 20th place on the NHL’s career scoring list, and the Anaheim Ducks beat the Chicago Blackhawks 3-1 in Anaheim, Calif.

• St. Louis’ hat trick sparks Lightning: Martin St. Louis scored three goals and set up another to lead the Tampa Bay Lightning to a 4-3 victory over the New Jersey Devils in Newark, N.J.

• Penguins double up Blue Jackets: Evgeni Malkin scored his 37th goal of the season, Brad Thiessen made 21 saves in his NHL debut and the Pittsburgh Penguins beat the Columbus Blue Jackets 4-2 in Pittsburgh.

• Panthers handle Canadiens: Stephen Weiss scored two goals and the Florida Panthers beat the Montreal Canadiens 4-2 in Sunrise, Fla.

• Senators acquire 6-foot-7 goalie: The Ottawa Senators moved quickly to add insurance with their top goalie out of the lineup.

The team acquired 6-foot-7 Ben Bishop from the St. Louis Blues for a second-round draft pick in 2013. Down in the minors, Bishop has been among the best goalies in the American Hockey League this season.

He joins the Senators less than a week after Craig Anderson had surgery for a severed tendon in his right hand. He cut his small finger while preparing food.

Badgers knock off No. 8 Ohio State

Men’s basketball: Jared Berggren scored Wisconsin’s final five points – including a go-ahead 3-pointer with 31 seconds left – and the 16th-ranked Badgers beat No. 8 Ohio State 63-60 in Columbus, Ohio.

Jordan Taylor had 19 points for the Badgers (21-8, 10-6 Big Ten).

Deshaun Thomas led Ohio State (23-6, 11-5) with 23 points.

• Louisville holds off Pitt: Russ Smith scored 18 points, Kyle Kuric added 17 and No. 17 Louisville (22-7, 10-6 Big East) held on for a 57-54 win over Pittsburgh (15-14, 4-12) in Louisville, Ky.

Cady leads Nebraska over No. 8 Ohio State

Women’s basketball: Freshman Emily Cady scored 24 points to match her career high and No. 23 Nebraska (21-7, 10-6 Big Ten) rolled to a 71-57 upset win over eighth-ranked Ohio State (24-5, 11-5) in Lincoln, Neb., the Buckeyes’ second loss in three games.

• Kentucky clinches SEC title: A’Dia Mathies and Bernisha Pinkett scored 13 points each to lead No. 13 Kentucky (24-5, 13-3) to a 76-40 victory over Mississippi State (14-15, 4-12) in Starkville, Miss., and clinch the Wildcats’ first regular-season Southeastern Conference title in 30 years.

Ferrer beats Almagro to win Copa Claro

Tennis: David Ferrer won the Copa Claro in Buenos Aires, Argentina, rallying past defending champion Nicolas Almagro 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 in an all-Spanish final.

The fifth-ranked Ferrer earned his 13th ATP tour title. He also won in January in Auckland, New Zealand.

• Del Potro beats Llodra in final: Argentina’s Juan Martin del Potro beat France’s Michael Llodra 6-4, 6-4 in the Open 13 final in Marseille, France, winning his first title of the season.

• Melzer tops Raonic: Austria’s Jurgen Melzer capped his amazing run through the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships in Memphis, Tenn., with a broken right big toe by beating Milos Raonic of Canada 7-5, 7-6 (4) for his fourth career title and first since 2010.

Vonn wins World Cup super-G in Bulgaria

Winter sports: On a rough and demanding course in Bansko, Bulgaria, American Lindsey Vonn showed that no woman rules this event quite like her.

She captured a World Cup super-G to become the career leader in the discipline. By winning her 18th super-G the American overtook Austria’s Renate Goetschl for the record.

• Blardone wins giant slalom: Italy’s Massimiliano Blardone mastered a fast-deteriorating course in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, to beat World Cup overall leader Marcel Hirscher in a giant slalom.

Blardone trailed Hirscher by 0.02 seconds after the first leg, but raced through soft, rutted snow to finish the two runs in 2 minutes, 33.77 seconds. It was his second victory of the season.

Hirscher was 0.16 behind in second place, extending his lead in the overall and giant slalom standings.

• Holcomb wins 4-man bobsled gold: Steven Holcomb of the U.S. won the gold medal in four-man at the bobsled world championships in Lake Placid, N.Y.

Holcomb and his crew of Justin Olsen, Steve Langton and Curt Tomasevicz had a four-run total of 3 minutes, 36.83 seconds on Sunday. They beat Germany’s Maximilian Arndt by a half-second at Mount Van Hoevenberg.

Lowe sets American high jump record

Miscellany: Chaunte Lowe set an American record in the women’s high jump at the USA Indoor Track & Field Championships in Albuquerque, N.M.

The 28-year Lowe cleared 6 feet, 7 1/2 inches on her third attempt, eclipsing Tisha Walker, who went 6-7 on Feb. 28, 1998.

• Kipyego wins Tokyo Marathon: Michael Kipyego of Kenya surged ahead of Haile Gebrselassie with 2 1/2 miles left to win the Tokyo Marathon for his first career victory.

Kipyego completed the 26.2 miles in 2 hours, 7 minutes, 37 seconds.

Ethiopia’s Atsede Habtamu won the women’s race in 2:25:28.

• Weber wins record fifth PBA title: Pete Weber won a record fifth U.S. Open bowling championship, throwing a strike on his final ball to beat Mike Fagan 215-214 in North Brunswick, N.J.

Weber surpassed his farther, Dick Weber, who won the tournament’s predecessor four times, as did Don Carter.

To reach the final, Weber beat Ryan Shafer 223-191 in the opening match and Jason Belmonte 225-213 in the semifinal.

• Lane tops Bassmaster Classic field: Chris Lane won the 42nd Bassmaster Classic by hauling in 51 pounds, 6 ounces over the three-day event in Bossier City, La., beating out Greg Vinson for the title by less than 3 pounds.

The 36-year-old from Guntersville, Ala., nearly doubled his career earnings with the $500,000 first prize.

Vinson, 34, of Wetumpka, Ala., was the penultimate angler to weigh in and took the lead, but Lane was last to the scales.
