Acquired The San Diego Padres acquired two-time All-Star outfielder Carlos Quentin from the Chicago White Sox in an attempt to bolster their anemic offense. Quentin grew up in the San Diego area and was a two-time All-Star with the White Sox. He has four consecutive 20-homer seasons, including 36 in 2008.

• The Toronto Blue Jays agreed to a minor league contract with left-hander Aaron Laffey and invited him to spring training. Laffey was 3-2 with a 3.88 ERA in 47 relief appearances for Seattle and the New York Yankees last season.

Cited Police say Minnesota Vikings cornerback Benny Sapp has been cited for fifth-degree assault and careless driving, both misdemeanors, after a run-in with security at Children’s Hospital in Minneapolis. Officers were called Friday morning after police say Sapp and his 11-year-old son tried to enter the hospital through a closed entrance. The Star Tribune reports Sapp left his son with a hospital security guard, saying the boy’s mother was inside and he had to go to work. Sapp allegedly pushed a security officer who tried to detain him in the parking ramp. Police Sgt. Bill Palmer says Sapp then chest-bumped a security officer who was standing in front of his vehicle.

Injured University of Dayton forward Josh Benson will miss the rest of the season after injuring his left knee Friday night during the Flyers’ win over Mississippi. An MRI examination revealed a torn ACL, and Benson will undergo surgery.

Insulted A report by soccer authorities said Liverpool’s Luis Suarez called Manchester United’s Patrice Evra a “Negro” seven times in the incident that led to his ban for eight matches. The report said that when Evra asked Suarez during the October game why he had been kicked, the striker replied in Spanish: “Porque tu eres negro.” That translates as “because you are black.” Evra said he would punch Suarez if he repeated the comment. Suarez replied: “No hablo con los negros” – “I don’t speak to blacks.” Suarez is from Uruguay and contends the use of “negro” in that country and other parts of Latin America is inoffensive in certain situations.

Fined Phoenix Coyotes forward Raffi Torres has been fined $2,500 by the NHL for a hit on Colorado Avalanche defenseman Jan Hejda. The hit came in the second period Thursday night. Torres lowered his shoulder and appeared to hit Hejda on the side of the head.

Hired Tennis player Andy Murray hired eight-time Grand Slam winner Ivan Lendl as his coach in a bid to finally win his first major title. The fourth-ranked Scotsman will begin working with the Czech-born Lendl as he prepares for the Australian Open, which starts Jan. 16.
