Settled The University of Miami said Tuesday that a breach-of-contract lawsuit that former Hurricanes football coach Randy Shannon filed in late April over money he said he was denied after his firing has been settled. Financial terms of the settlement were not released. Shannon was fired Nov. 27, 2010, after going 28-22 in four seasons with the Hurricanes.

Hired Former Bulter and Iowa basketball coach Todd Lickliter is coming back to Indianapolis. The Butler alum is expected to be named Marian University’s next coach today. It’s a splashy move for the Indianapolis NAIA school that was looking for its first new head coach in more than three decades. Lickliter, who replaced Thad Matta at Xavier and Steve Alford at Iowa, again has some big shoes to fill – replacing John Grimes, who retired March 28. Lickliter, 57, twice took Butler to the NCAA tournament’s regional semifinals.

• Former Stanford star Mark Madsen is returning to the school as an assistant basketball coach. Coach Johnny Dawkins said Madsen will replace the retired Dick Davey on his staff. Madsen helped lead the Cardinal to four NCAA tournament appearances and the 1998 Final Four during his collegiate career. He played nine years in the NBA.

Retired Former light middleweight boxing champion Winky Wright retired. Wright (51-6-1, 25 knockouts) lost his first fight in three years Saturday, dropping a unanimous decision to Peter “Kid Chocolate” Quillin. Wright, 40, had fought just once since losing to Bernard Hopkins in July 2007.

Released The Detroit Lions released rookie wide receiver Jared Karstetter of Washington State and Ferris High. The Lions signed wide receiver Maurice Stovall to a one-year deal.

Named Florida catcher and Mariners draft pick Mike Zunino, Stanford right-hander Mark Appel and North Carolina State lefty Carlos Rodon have been selected as finalists for the Golden Spikes Award, given to the nation’s top amateur player. The winner will be announced July 6.
