Fired Central Michigan fired basketball coach Ernie Zeigler on Wednesday with two years left on his contract. The buyout will cost the school $368,437. Zeigler was 75-111 over six seasons. Central Michigan was 11-21 this season and 10-21 last year. His son, Trey Zeigler, has averaged 16 points a game over two seasons, leading the team in scoring each year. The 6-foot-5 guard has two years of eligibility.

Granted Southern California has granted basketball forward Garrett Jackson permission to transfer. Coach Kevin O’Neill said Jackson “did a great job” for two years and is free to contact other schools. The sophomore from Portland plans to remain enrolled through the end of the semester. Jackson averaged 6.9 points and 3.1 rebounds in 32 games this season, including the final 14 as a starter.

Died Soccer player John “Clarkie” Souza, a striker on the U.S. team that upset England in the 1950 World Cup, has died. He was 91. The Fall River, Mass., native made 16 appearances for the national team from 1947-54.

Announced Boston Celtics forward Chris Wilcox is scheduled to have surgery for an enlarged aorta and will miss the rest of the season but should recover for next year. In 28 games this season, four of them starts, he is averaging 5.4 points and 4.4 rebounds.

Rewarded Oklahoma State football coach Mike Gundy’s new eight-year, $30.3 million contract includes a big boost at the beginning. Details of Gundy’s deal released to The Associated Press after an open-records request showed Gundy will earn $3.275 million in the upcoming season. That’s a jump of more than $1 million over the $2.1 million Gundy was due last year. His salary will go back down to $2.85 million in 2013 before climbing over the rest of the term of the extension, maxing out at $3.55 million in 2019. Gundy led the Cowboys to their first Big 12 championship and BCS bowl victory last season.

Injured Kansas City catcher Salvador Perez will have surgery on his left knee to repair a lateral meniscus tear. He will likely be out several weeks.The 21-year-old Perez hit .331 with the Royals last season after a promotion Aug. 10.
