Pirates win to remain in first

Landon Scott drilled a two-out two-run single in the top of the seventh inning and Dan Scheibe turned in a masterful effort in relief to propel the Whitworth Pirates (13-7-1, 7-2) to a 4-2 victory over the eighth-ranked Linfield Wildcats (13-6, 10-5) in Northwest League baseball action on Sunday in McMinnville, Ore.

With the victory, the Pirates remained tied with the Pacific Boxers atop the standings.

Scott’s second hit of the day broke a 2-2 tie. Scheibe (1-2) entered the game in relief of starter C.J. Perry with one out in the third inning and slammed the door on the Wildcats. He allowed just two hits and no runs in 6 2/3 innings. He struck out eight and walked one.

Gerhard Muelheims, Nick Motsinger and Kevin Valerio also had two hits apiece for the Pirates.

• The Community Colleges of Spokane Sasquatch (6-8) notched a 13-5, 6-5 doubleheader sweep over the visiting Grays Harbor Chokers in nonconference play.

Trevor LaHonta had five hits, Donnie Santos homered and Brenden Herzer had a pair of doubles for the Sasquatch on the day.

• Austin Voth (4-0) allowed one run on four hits in six innings of work and nine different Washington hitters drove in runs as the Huskies (15-7) breezed to a 13-1 victory over the Cal State Bakersfield Roadrunners (7-14) in nonconference play in Seattle.

Voth fanned six as the Huskies completed a three-game sweep.

• The Pacific-12 Conference game between the Washington State Cougars and the UCLA Bruins was rained out in Los Angeles.

The final game of the three-game series is scheduled for today at 1 p.m. The seventh-ranked Bruins won the first two games of the series.

Basketball

Morgan Woodrow scored a game-high 21 points and Dominique Conners added 14 points, six rebounds and five assists to carry the San Diego Toreros (26-8) to a 58-47 victory over the Washington Huskies (20-14) in a women’s National Invitational Tournament game in Seattle.

Regina Rogers was a one-woman show for the Huskies. She finished with 20 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. No other Washington player scored more than seven points.

The Huskies shot just 26 percent for the game – 15 of 58 and made only 1 of 13 attempts from 3-point range. The Toreros hit 20 of 68 shots – 29 percent.

Softball

Lindsey Walchli allowed one run in 12 innings of work and the Community Colleges of Spokane Sasquatch (9-5, 4-0) rolled to a 6-0, 9-1 sweep over the visiting Blue Mountain Timberwolves in NWAACC action.

Tiffany Joyce had a three-run triple in the nightcap and finished with four RBIs on the day.

The Sasquatch have won nine straight games after dropping their first five of the season.

• Kaitlin Inglesby smacked a two-run home run and Kasey Stanchek (9-0) tossed four shutout innings in relief to propel the third-ranked Washington Huskies (32-1, 3-0) to a 3-1 victory and a three-game sweep over the Utah Utes (21-8, 0-3) in a Pac-12 Conference season-opening series in Seattle.

Kimi Pohlman doubled home a run to cap the scoring for Washington. The Huskies travel to No. 2 California next weekend for a three-game series.
