In brief: Pilot accused of boarding with gun

From Wire Reports

Buffalo, N.Y. – An airline pilot was accused of trying to board a flight at Buffalo for New York City on Friday with a loaded revolver in his bag, and authorities believe he’d been flying with it for two days.

The U.S. attorney’s office charged 52-year-old Brett Dieter, of Barbersville, Va., with possessing a concealed firearm. A screener spotted the .357 Magnum before Dieter boarded Friday at Buffalo Niagara International Airport.

Dieter was to pilot a Piedmont Airlines flight to LaGuardia International Airport.

A Transportation Security Administration spokeswoman said pilots cannot carry weapons on board aircraft unless they are members of a federal Flight Deck Officer Program. She said Dieter is not a member of the program.

Woman who sent son back must pay

Nashville, Tenn. – An American woman who adopted a Russian boy and later sent him back to Moscow on a one-way flight has been ordered to pay a sum of $150,000 and an additional $1,000 per month in child support until he’s an adult.

A Bedford County, Tenn., judge said Thursday that Torry Hansen must begin making the child support payments in June and continue to pay until the 10-year-old boy turns 18. Circuit Court Judge Lee Russell said the $150,000 Hansen must pay includes damages for breach of contract, legal fees and support for the boy.

Hansen sent Artyom Saveliev back to Russia in April of 2010 with a letter saying the child was disturbed, violent and she didn’t want him anymore. The case created an international uproar and prompted Russia to temporarily halt its adoption program with the U.S.

The World Association for Children and Parents, which helped Hansen adopt the child, then filed a lawsuit seeking child support.
