John was born in El Dorado, Arkansas but moved to the Idaho Falls, Idaho area with his mother when he was only a few weeks old.
After graduating from Idaho Falls High School, he enlisted in the US Air Force and served for 17 years, including a tour in Viet Nam.
After his service in the military, he attended Eastern Washington University and earned a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology.
In 1989 he began working for the US Postal Service, first as a letter carrier and later as a postmaster (also serving a term as president of the local chapter of the National Association of Postal Supervisors), from which he retired earlier this year.
John loved learning and was very interested in history, particularly in hearing the personal stories of previous generations.
He loved gadgets, playing computer games and reading, particularly science fiction, and enjoyed tinkering and working around the farm as a way to relax.
He loved having the chance to travel around the country with his wife, exploring new places, and was always on the lookout for the best fishing spots.
He was a fun and loving man who will be deeply missed by everyone who knew him.
John is survived by his wife Diane, his daughter Catherine, his mother Mary, his sisters Donna and Laura, and his brothers Lars, Howard and Mark.
