Chewelah defeats Medical Lake

Derek Smith and the Chewelah Cougars handed Northeast A League newcomer Medical Lake its first loss of the football season on Friday night.

Smith threw for two touchdowns and ran for another as Chewelah gained control early and held on for the 33-28 win at Medical Lake.

Smith completed 12 of 19 passes for 174 yards and ran the ball 19 times for 123 yards. Medical Lake’s Micah Tappero ran for 100 yards and two touchdowns, but the Cardinals (5-1, 3-1) didn’t have enough to overcome a 27-14 halftime deficit.

The win moved Chewelah (5-1, 3-0) and Freeman into a tie for first place in the NEA.

Freeman 41, Lakeside 0: The Scotties (5-1, 3-0) limited the visiting Eagles (2-4, 1-3) to 46 yards of total offense and cruised to the easy victory. Freeman’s Christian Dresback ran for 207 yards and two touchdowns and Wyatt Smith threw for two touchdowns and ran for another.

Newport 31, Riverside 21: Braden Barranco ran for 214 yards and two touchdowns and added a passing score as the Grizzlies (2-3, 1-2) took control in the second half and beat the visiting Rams (1-5, 1-3). Barranco also had 12 tackles on defense for Newport, which trailed 14-13 at halftime. Coltin Worley and Brayden Proctor caught touchdown passes for the Grizzlies.

Great Northern

Cheney 34, East Valley 28: Austin Kautzman scored all four of Cheney’s first-half touchdowns and the Blackhawks (3-3, 1-1) hung on late to beat the visiting Knights (5-1, 2-1). Kautzman finished with 238 yards on 20 carries and four scores. Eric Igbinoba added 138 yards and a touchdown for Cheney, which led 27-7 at halftime. Taylor Watkins threw two of his three touchdown passes in the second half for East Valley, but the Knights couldn’t complete the comeback.

Pullman 33, Clarkston 27: Justin Cillay ran for two scores and threw for a pair of touchdowns as the Greyhounds (5-1, 3-0) edged the visiting Bantams (1-5, 0-3). Austin Hansen threw four touchdowns for Clarkston.

West Valley 41, Deer Park 13: Tyler Stavnes completed 15 of 20 passes for 328 yards and four touchdowns as the Eagles (5-1, 3-0) eased past the visiting Stags (3-3, 0-2). West Valley led 20-0 at halftime and then added 21 unanswered points in the third quarter to put the game away. Marcus Jackson finished with 104 receiving yards and three touchdowns. Nick Clough threw two fourth-quarter touchdowns for the Stags.

North Star

Kootenai 46, Lakeside 0: Matthew Speelman and Jake Pfeiffer scored two touchdowns apiece as the Warriors (4-2, 3-0) scored 32 first-quarter points and walloped the Knights (0-5, 0-2) in Plummer.

Northeast 2B

Reardan 19, Colfax 14: Charlie Eldred ran for two touchdowns to guide the Indians (4-1, 2-0) to a win over the visiting Bulldogs (3-1, 1-1). Eldred’s second score was a 54-yard run that put Reardan ahead 19-6.

Springdale 51, Liberty 24: Shane O’Malley ran for four touchdowns and added a late passing score as the Chargers (2-2, 1-1) ran past the visiting Lancers (2-4, 0-2).

Southeast 2B

Tekoa-Oakesdale/Rosalia 22, Asotin 6: Craig Nelson hauled in three TD passes from quarterback Ryan Maley as the Nighthawks (6-0, 4-0) upended the host Panthers (1-3, 1-2).

Northeast 1B North

Wellpinit 62, Northport 34: A.J. Kieffer ran for three touchdowns and threw for another score as the Redskins (5-1, 3-1) jumped ahead early and cruised past the visiting Mustangs (2-4, 0-3). Kyle McCrea added 129 yards and two first-quarter touchdowns for Wellpinit, which led 42-6 at the half. Honeyray Brown had two interceptions on defense for the Redskins.

Columbia-Inchelium 62, Waterville 12: Dustin Wyborney ran for 287 yards on 16 carries and scored four touchdowns as the Lions (4-2, 3-1) dumped the visiting Shockers (1-5, 1-3). Quentin Holford added 112 yards on eight carries and two scores for Columbia-Inchelium.

Cusick 70, Republic 20: Ryan Sample threw for 332 yards and five touchdowns and added two rushing scores as the Panthers (6-0, 3-0) whipped the visiting Tigers (4-2, 3-2). Derrick Bluff scored four touchdowns – two rushing and two receiving – for Cusick, which built a 48-0 halftime lead.

Selkirk 40, Curlew 0: Dominic Cain threw three touchdown passes to Emery Maupin and the Rangers (4-2, 2-1) whipped the visiting Cougars (0-6, 0-4) at Ione.

Northeast 1B South

Almira/Coulee-Hartline 46, Odessa-Harrington 26: Mitch Hunt hauled in three touchdown passes from quarterback Drew Isaak and the Warriors (5-1, 4-0) ran past the visiting Titans (3-3, 2-1). Hunt also had 103 rushing yards and another touchdown. Odessa-Harrington was led by Cade Weber, who caught six passes for 113 yards and a fourth-quarter touchdown.

Southeast 1B

Garfield-Palouse 48, St. John-Endicott 8: Riley Hodges galloped for 266 yards on 19 carries and scored three times in the Vikings’ rout over the visiting Eagles (0-5, 0-3). Hunter Woltering threw two first-half touchdown passes for Garfield-Palouse (2-3, 2-1). Wade West gained 124 yards on 26 carries and scored SJE’s lone touchdown in the first quarter.

LaCrosse-Washtucna/Kahlotus 66, Pomeroy 36: Johnathan Holdren ran for two scores and caught two touchdown passes as the Tigercats (5-1, 3-0) routed the host Pirates (2-4, 1-2).

Touchet 56, Colton 20: The Indians (4-1, 2-1) scored 30 unanswered points in the second quarter and cruised to the win over the host Wildcats (2-4, 0-3).

Central Idaho

Grangeville 42, St. Maries 0: The Bulldogs (5-1, 1-0) scored 28 third-quarter points and eased to a victory over the visiting Lumberjacks (2-4, 0-1).

Nonleague

Lake City 42, Sandpoint 14: Bruce Shipley threw two touchdowns to lead the Timberwolves (4-1) to a win over the visiting Bulldogs (1-5). Brandon Johnson added two scores – one rushing and one receiving – for Lake City.

Lakeland 42, Colville 0: Corey Hansel ran for two touchdowns and Derek Bayley threw for two scores as the Hawks (4-2) flew past the visiting Indians (2-4) at Rathdrum.
