Central Valley girls soccer qualifies for state

The Central Valley girls soccer team dominated the second half en route to 1-0 win regional at Richland on Tuesday that made the Bears the first team to qualify for the State 4A tournament. The Bears (13-2) weathered the long-ball offense of the Bombers, then struck early in the second half. Paige Gallaway played the ball into the goalmouth in the 43rd minute to set up Kasey Ames’ well-placed shot that eventually stood up as the winner. “We took over in the second half and dominated,” Central Valley coach Andres Monrroy said. “It could have been more than that, because they couldn’t keep up with our speed. We had a great game.” Central Valley gets a week off before hosting a first-round playoff match on Tuesday, against an opponent to be determined. The Bears hope to play the match on their home field, but that will depend on field conditions following a football game Friday night. The Bears outshot Richland 9-5. CV goalkeeper Jessie Kunz-Pfeiffer made five saves. Mead 3, Pasco 2: After a scoreless first half, the Panthers (11-4) opened up a three-goal lead and held off the Bulldogs to advance to within a game of the state tournament. “We had a lot of scoring opportunities and couldn’t put it away, but we kept our composure and worked hard,” said Mead coach Kevin Houston, who got goals from Kathryn Imming, Kara Marbury and the eventual winner from Martha Heaps in the 64th minute. 3A regional Madison Boyd scored twice in a five-minute span as unbeaten Mt. Spokane routed Kennewick 11-0 to move within a game of the state playoffs. The Wildcats (16-0) led 7-0 at halftime and outshot the Lions 26-1 in the match, played at Spokane Falls Community College. “The girls definitely didn’t look past this one, and it was one of those games where we had a lot of fun,” said Mt. Spokane coach Ryan Campanella, whose team will face Kamiakin at 3 p.m. Thursday at Mt. Spokane. Kamiakin defeated North Central 5-0 on Tuesday, eliminating the Indians. The winner of that match will be the overall top seed in the state tournament. The loser plays Saturday in a loser-out game against either Hanford or Southridge. Hanford 2, Shadle Park 1: The Falcons overcame an early Shadle Park goal to eliminate the Highlanders and move closer to a state berth. Kaycee Hert scored in the eighth minute for Shadle Park, but Hanford equalized 6 minutes later and took the lead for good halfway through the second half. Shadle keeper Ainslee Bessmer made 16 saves. Southridge 4, University 1: Despite outshooting the hosts 13-5, the Titans were eliminated in a regional match in Kennewick. University (10-6) trailed 2-0 at halftime. District 7 2A West Valley made all five of its penalty kicks in a 3-2 shootout victory over East Valley that sends the Eagles to a district final at Pullman. Pullman, the Great Northern League champion, earned home-field advantage with a 4-0 win over Cheney.
