Abandoned home damaged in fire

An abandoned house at Park and Broadway in Spokane Valley caught fire around 10 Sunday morning. Capt. Pat Schaffer of Spokane Valley Fire said 27 firefighters responded to the fire which was in the attic at the rear of the building. Schaffer said it was difficult to place a dollar amount on the damage since the building had been vacant for some time and was in a run-down condition. “Abandoned homes can become easy targets for trespassers,” Schafer said. He said cooking or warming fires are often started, but not completely extinguished. No one was hurt in the blaze which is under investigation.
