Whitworth men’s soccer rallies past PLU

Robby Ubben’s 84th minute goal gave the Whitworth men’s soccer team a 3-2 come-from-behind win over Pacific Lutheran in a Northwest Conference battle for first place Saturday afternoon in Spokane.

Karl Muelheims assisted on the winning goal.

Samuel Engle opened the scoring with a bicycle kick in the 11th minute. Emmanuel Amarh and Shane Gutierrez then scored to put the Lutes (5-4-1, 4-1) up 2-1. In the 66th minute, Sam Selisch scored to knot the match at 2 before Ubben’s winner.

The Pirates (8-0-1, 5-0) gained sole possession of first place in the NWC with their eighth straight win.

• Alex Martinez scored the first three goals of the match and Peninsula (11-1, 4-0) went on to beat Community Colleges of Spokane (2-5-1, 0-4) 7-0 in an NWAACC match in Port Angeles, Wash.

Women’s soccer

Pacific Lutheran’s Mimi Granlund scored in the 88th minute and the Lutes (2-1-4, 0-1-4) played to a 2-2 tie with Whitworth in Northwest Conference action in Spokane.

Tiara Pajimola and Katrin Grant scored goals for the Pirates (5-4-1, 5-0-1).

• Ellie Engel’s 80th minute goal, which came off an assist from Anna Valentine, was the difference as North Idaho (6-3-1) beat Gonzaga’s club team 1-0 in Coeur d’Alene.

• Shelbi Vienna-Hallam’s 59th-minute goal gave Peninsula a 3-1 lead and the Pirates (11-0, 6-0) went on to beat Community Colleges of Spokane 3-2 in an NWAACC match in Port Angeles, Wash.

Rainey Pelzel and Lateashea Currie scored for the Sasquatch (5-1-2, 4-1-1).

Volleyball

Lucy Capron and Tiffany Burk combined for 21 kills as George Fox (6-7, 4-2) beat Whitworth 25-18, 25-17, 25-20 in a Northwest Conference match in Newberg, Ore.

Jalana White had a match-high 13 kills and Maddye Dinsmore had 27 assists and 15 digs for the Pirates (5-8, 1-5).

• Allison Baker had seven of her career-high 29 kills in the decisive fourth set and Idaho (6-10, 4-2) beat Texas-San Antonio (10-5, 3-2) 20-25, 28-26, 25-13, 25-22 in a Western Athletic Conference match in Moscow, Idaho.

Baker added 10 digs and four blocks for her 11th double-double of the season.

• Annie Arnzen had 10 kills and 10 digs as Community Colleges of Spokane (16-5, 4-2) swept Treasure Valley (2-16, 0-5) in a NWAACC match in Ontario, Ore. Scores were 25-16, 25-15, 25-8.

The Sasquatch had 18 total aces. Amanda Youngers and Camille Rounds had five apiece.

Cross country

Led by Lindsey Drake’s 11th-place finish, the Gonzaga women took third place out of seven teams at the Dellinger Invitational at the Springfield Golf Course in Springfield, Ore.

Drake completed the 5-kilometer course in 17 minutes, 13 seconds. Three other Bulldogs finished inside the top 20. Lauren Bergam was 16th (17:35), Maggie Jones was 17th (17:36) and Emily Thomas was 18th (17:36).

Hannah Kiser led Idaho to a fifth-place finish. Kiser finished seventh in 17:05.

The Gonzaga men took fifth. Tate Kelley was GU’s top placer, completing the 8-kilometer layout in 24:27, good for 21st place.

Idaho’s Barry Britt took 17th in 24:18 as the Vandals finished in 10th place.

• The Whitworth men took eighth and the women were ninth at the Charles Bowles Invitational at Bush Park in Salem, Ore.

The Pirates men were led by Colton Berry, who completed the 8-kilometer “Cardinal” race in 26:07.28, good enough for 30th place. Timothy Hill was 42nd in 26:17.19.

Whitworth’s Christina Anderson led the way in the women’s 5-kilometer race. Anderson finished 20th in 18:49.10 and was followed by teammate Elisabeth Spencer, who took 21st in 18:50.54.

The Community Colleges of Spokane men were eighth in the “Gold” race and the women took 10th.

Rowing

The Washington State women got out to a good start in the season-opening Head of the Pend Oreille in Priest River.

The Cougars’ varsity 8-plus boat had the fastest time of the day, completing the course in 19:02. Gonzaga’s varsity 8-plus boat finished in 19:07.

All four of WSU’s varsity 4-plus boats finished in less than 21 minutes.

For the men, Gonzaga’s varsity-8 boat finished first in 17:09.

Junior hockey

North Okanogan (4-1-0-1) scored four goals in the first period and beat the Spokane Braves 7-5 in KIJHL play in Spokane.

Alex Marmon scored three goals to lead the Braves (3-3).
