New York Yankees captain Derek Jeter will be sidelined until after the All-Star break because of a new fracture in his injured left ankle.
Yankees general manager Brian Cashman made the announcement before Thursday night’s home game against Arizona.
Cashman said the injury to the 38-year-old shortstop “is obviously a setback.” Jeter could be out at least three months.
Jeter was hurt last October in the opener of the American League championship series.
Jeter played sparingly in spring training and started the season rehabbing at the team’s spring training complex in Tampa, Fla.
Ortiz eyes return
Boston designated hitter David Ortiz is expected to return to the Red Sox lineup when they open a home series tonight against Kansas City.
Ortiz hasn’t played this season because of an injured right Achilles, which limited him to 90 games in 2012. He began a rehabilitation assignment last week and went 4 for 20, including a home run yesterday.
Boston manager John Farrell said all signs point to Ortiz being ready tonight when the Red Sox play at Fenway Park for the first time since Monday’s bombings at the Boston Marathon.
