Fun ramps up as summer winds down

Three weeks.

Three weeks until Labor Day weekend. Three weeks to cram in all that you’ve not accomplished this summer. Camping. Big dumb action flicks. Fruit picking at Green Bluff. Lazy days at the lake. Visits to Silverwood. Hiking.

You get the idea.

The problem has been one of Too Much To Do. It’s not a problem solved this week, either. In Sandpoint, we bid adieu the big white tent on the banks of Lake Pend Oreille with tonight’s sold out Steve Miller Band show, Saturday’s set by The Avett Brothers and Sunday’s symphonic finale. On Thursday, the country duo Big & Rich will perform at the Coeur d’Alene Casino, the latest in a line of big name country acts to hit area stages. (Next up? Martina McBride on Aug. 31 at Northern Quest.)

On theater stages beginning Thursday, we have Coeur d’Alene Summer Theatre opening “9 to 5: The Musical” and Interplayers opening “Church Basement Ladies.” Meanwhile, Spokane Civic Theatre’s Academy actors star in “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” starting today, and Christian Youth Theater wraps up its production of “Hairspray” at the Bing with a show today and two tomorrow.

If a trip to the Lake City is in your plans tonight, sample art and and goodies at the downtown Art Walk. If you’re heading south, check out the classic cars on display at Hot Rockford Nights – just don’t be fooled by the name. Given that the show and shine is Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., it’s more like a Hot Rockford Afternoon.

Add to this a vast array of free outdoor concerts everywhere from Rathdrum and Coeur d’Alene to the South Hill, Browne’s Addition and Kendall Yards in the coming week, and you might find plenty of reasons to keep the camping gear stowed for another week.

Get out and enjoy.
