Obituary: Young, Selma Elena
Age 92
She was born to Carl and Minnie Larson in Mizpah, Minnesota May 30, 1921.
Proceded in death by her brother Otto (surviving wife Eileen) and Levi Larson and his wife Gertie.
A devoted Mother to their three children, Roberta (Stephen) Peterson, Rebecca (Jack) Stryker, and Gary (Jacque) Young.
Aunt and great-aunt to numerous nieces and nephews.
Grandmother to Nicole Peterson, Kristina Peterson, Angela (Seth) Preston, Ryan (Annette) Young and Tana (Marc) Caldwell.
Great-grandmother to Lily, Ella and Ian Caldwell, Grant Preston, and Hailey and Kimberely Young.
Selma was a nursing assistant in Minneapolis, Minnesota before moving to Spokane in 1943.
She met Eugene (Bob) Young in the fall of 1943.
They fell in love immediately and were married June 6, 1944.
A long time member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Selma worked in the nursery, in the office, at Vacation Bible School and for the Ladies Aid, every Wednesday for over forty years, helping sew hundreds of patchwork quilts for Lutheran World Relief.
Sewing clothing for the children as they grew up occupied a lot of her time as did knitting, embroidery and crocheting.
Selma always had a green thumb when it came to indoor plants and was always eager to share “starts” with friends and neighbors.
She and Bob liked to plant flowers in their yards for others to enjoy all year long.
Selma loved to play the piano for church and family but especially for Bob in the evenings after the children left home.
Never afraid of getting dirty and doing hard work she and Bob remodeled two homes during their 68 year long marriage.
The Young family enjoyed the outdoors and nature’s beauty.
The entire family camped together for many years but when the last of the children moved on they continued traveling and ended up going to all 50 states.
Throughout their travels, they collected rocks of all types, which they later cut and polished and made into beautiful resin table tops.
Selma died of complications of Alzheimer’s disease.
She spent the last three and one-half years of her life at Fairwood Assisted Living (Northridge) facility.
Her end-of-life care was at Royal Park Care Center.
Our heart felt thanks and appreciation to both staffs for their wonderful care.
Her kind heart, sense of humor, bright smile and tireless energy touched everyone who met her.
We love you and will miss you more than words can ever say.
You will live in our hearts and memories forever.
