Area roundup: Honors keep rolling in for WSU’s Castain

Washington State senior forward Micaela Castain was one of four Pac-12 Conference women’s soccer players to be named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-America teams on Friday. 

Castain, the Pac-12 Player of the Year, was named to the second team. She led the Cougars to their highest Pac-12 finish ever as WSU came in second behind UCLA and earned its third-straight NCAA tournament appearance and fourth in the last five years. She led the team in goals (11), assists (11) and points (33), all of which also led the Pac-12.

Castain became the first WSU women’s soccer player in the program’s 25 seasons to earn such an honor.

Women’s basketball

Laura Hughes made 8 of 9 shots and finished with a game-high 21 points as Eastern Washington claimed its first victory of the year by beating Cal State Northridge 73-53 in a nonconference game at Reese Court in Cheney.

Hayley Hodgins scored 15 points and Lexie Nelson added 13 points, seven assists and six rebounds for the Eagles (1-5), who held a 43-33 rebounding advantage.

• Jordan Sullivan scored 16 points and Montana (5-1) held off Idaho and beat the Vandals 59-56 at the Lady Griz Classic in Missoula, Mont.

Ali Forde had 13 points and Alyssa Charlston added 12 points and nine rebounds for the Vandals (5-4).

Men’s basketball

North Idaho and Community Colleges of Spokane both won its opening-round games at the Bigfoot Classic at Spokane Community College.

NIC (10-2) came alive in the second half and beat the Spokane All-Stars 100-83.

CCS (3-2) had six players in double figures – led by Jack Nygaard’s 26 points – and routed the North Idaho All-Stars 115-76.

Tyler Peltram, Tanner Stolz and Sean Collins scored to guide the Spokane Braves (9-18-0-3) to a 3-2 double-overtime win over the Beaver Valley Nitehawks (18-6-1-2) in a KIJHL game at Eagles Ice-A-Rena in Spokane.
