Ferris High School principal ‘canned’ for charity
The students and staff at Ferris High School continued their annual food drive with a twist and “canned” their principal, Kevin Foster, from his office.
The idea behind the Can the Principal food drive was to fill his office with so many canned goods that he was driven out of his workspace.
As of Monday, more than 5,000 cans had been donated. Jennifer Walther, the Ferris ASB leadership adviser, said that Foster’s office was impossible to enter and that he won’t be able to work in there for the rest of the week.
The food drive runs through today.
The food will be donated to Second Harvest Food Bank.
Cooper students help Salvation Army
Cooper Elementary students recently filled five bins with canned food to donate to the Salvation Army.
The idea for the food drive came from a Cooper sixth-grader who wanted to give back after her family received help from the Salvation Army. She wrote a proposal to the ASB, and the school arranged to have a collection bin delivered.
But one bin wasn’t enough. The school asked for two more bins three days later. And, students continued to bring food and the Salvation Army brought two more bins. The food was picked up on Dec. 13 by Spokane County sheriff’s Deputy Craig Chamberlin and Salvation Army Maj. Steve Ball, who thanked the students at a school assembly.
DECA students qualify for state
Spokane Public Schools DECA students at Ferris, Lewis and Clark, North Central, Rogers, and Shadle Park high schools were among more than 1,000 students from 17 local schools at the DECA Conference at Spokane Falls Community College on Dec. 9.
The students took a business exam and presented a paper to local businesses or completed two hands-on activities. DECA is a student organization that prepares leaders and entrepreneurs for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality, and management in high schools and colleges.
The students listed below have qualified for the State DECA Conference in Seattle in March.
