In brief: M’s turn back time, beat Padres

Baseball: Raul Ibanez hit a three-run homer off former teammate Freddy Garcia to spark a five-run first-inning and lead the Seattle Mariners to an 8-3 win over the San Diego Padres on Sunday in Peoria, Ariz.

Garcia and Ibanez were twice teammates in Seattle and played together last season for the New York Yankees.

Ibanez, who will turn 41 this season, sent a sinker over the right field wall for his first homer of the spring.

Mike Morse and Michael Saunders followed Ibanez with back-to-back doubles before Garcia recorded his first out, a strikeout of Jesus Montero. The 36-year-old Garcia allowed five hits and four earned runs in his only inning.

Robert Andino and Kyle Seager each went 2 for 3 with a run scored for the Mariners.

Starter Erasmo Ramirez got the win with one inning of work for Seattle, which used nine pitchers to hold the Padres to nine hits.

Historic Nordic win for U.S. team

Nordic skiing: Kikkan Randall and Jessica Diggins gave the United States its first gold medal in cross- country skiing at the Nordic world championships at Val Di Fiemme, Italy, with a victory in the women’s team sprint.

The American duo finished 7.8 seconds ahead of defending champions Charlotte Kalla and Ida Ingemars- dotter of Sweden.

“It feels incredible,” Randall said. “This is something we’ve looked forward to for a long time. It’s my seventh world championship and I’ve had to spend a lot of time watching award ceremonies. So we’re pretty excited to do it.”

Randall anchored the victory with a scorching final lap to pull away from the Swedish and Finnish teams. Finland’s Riika Sarasoja-Lilja and Krista Lahteenmaki were third, 10.9 seconds behind the Americans.

“That moment when your teammate comes running out (in the finish area) it starts to sink in that you’re world champion,” Randall said.

Randall is one of the top sprinters on the circuit, with seven World Cup victories.
