Erdem, Carter spark CV

Teammates Issabella Erdem and McKinzie Carter tied for all-around honors to propel the Central Valley Bears to a Greater Spokane League gymnastics victory on Wednesday at Ferris.

The Bears held off runner-up Ferris 154.825 to 151.1. Mt. Spokane was third, followed by North Central and Lewis and Clark.

Erdem won floor exercise and uneven bars, while Carter was tops on the vault. Alex Dinwoodie of Ferris won the balance beam.

Girls basketball

Taylor Smith tallied a game-high 18 points, Bailey Brown scored 10 and Autumn Hubert hit a pair of free throws with 58 seconds left to help the Springdale Chargers (6-5) hold on for a 41-37 win over the visiting Chewelah Cougars (4-6) in nonleague action.

Also in nonleague play, Emily Jones totaled 22 points and 10 rebounds to power the St. John-Endicott Eagles (8-1) to a 65-58 overtime win over the visiting Lind-Ritzville/Sprague Broncos (4-6).

Boys basketball

Derek Smith tossed in a game-high 22 points and the visiting Chewelah Cougars (7-3) rolled to a 52-25 nonleague victory over the Springdale Chargers (0-11).

Elsewhere in nonleague play, Kyle Canaday and Dylan Hartz combined for 23 points as the visiting Lind-Ritzville/Sprague Broncos (9-1) rolled to a 77-34 win over the St. John-Endicott Eagles (1-9).
