Eags? What is that?

I really thought it  would go away and be gone.

Not so.

Wednesday morning, front page, sports section in bold headlines. “Football Eags’ team of the year”

I believe if you are leaving two letters out of the word Eagle you are demeaning one of the great symbols of freedom coveted by the USA and also everyone who has called themselves Eastern Eagles.

My three kids attended Eastern and were proud to be Eagles. I followed Eastern basketball closely back in the ’50s and ’60s and some of the greatest basketball players who ever played the game came from the little town of Pine City.

I just wonder if the Liefers, the Siegels, and the Rofflers would be happy to be called Eags.

Oh, by the way one of the quickest players to ever play the game was called Rabbit Roffler. Suppose if you called him Rab, would that mean anything to anybody?

I’m a World War II Marine Corps veteran and I surely would not try to explain the emblem of the Marine Corps as the Eag, the Anchor, and the Globe.
