Altidore hits again as U.S. tops Honduras

Soccer: Jozy Altidore scored a goal in his fourth consecutive international match, enough for the United States to edge Honduras 1-0 in a World Cup qualifying game Tuesday night at Sandy, Utah.

Before 20,250 fans at Rio Tinto Stadium, the Americans remained atop the six-team CONCACAF group. The United States (4-1-1) won three straight games this month, all since a 0-0 draw at Mexico gave it a boost toward the top.

It has also shut out its last two opponents, Panama and Honduras.

Honduras (2-3-1) was the last team to win at the United States in a World Cup qualifying match, played in 2001. The Americans have won or drawn 25 straight at home since then.

The visitors made it difficult on the Americans for much of the game by slowing the pace before Altidore broke through.

After several second-half near misses, the U.S. got its goal in the 73rd minute. Altidore took a low cross from Fabian Johnson from near the end line and, with his left foot, slotted it past goalkeeper Noel Valladares across the goalmouth inside the right post.

Australia beat Iraq 1-0 in Sydney before a crowd of 80,532, with Josh Kennedy scoring on a header in the 83rd minute.

Iran won 1-0 on a goal by Reza Ghoochannejad in the 60th minute at Ulsan, South Korea. Iran finished first in its group and reached the World Cup for the fourth time.

South Korea secured second place on goal difference after finishing even on points with Uzbekistan, which won 5-1 at home against Qatar. South Korea is going to its eighth straight World Cup.

Vander Tuig pitches UCLA to victory

College baseball: Nick Vander Tuig allowed four hits over seven-plus innings and UCLA produced just enough offense to defeat North Carolina State 2-1 in the College World Series at Omaha, Neb.

UCLA (46-17) moved within one victory of next week’s best-of-three finals.

Vander Tuig (13-4) retired 13 of 14 batters heading into the eighth inning. David Berg came on after Vander Tuig gave up a leadoff single to Bryan Adametz. Berg worked out of trouble in the eighth and earned his NCAA record-tying 23rd save.

In the other game, Brian Holberton homered, freshman Trent Thornton pitched a strong seven innings and No. 1 national seed North Carolina extended its stay with a 4-2 win over LSU.

The Tar Heels (58-11) play North Carolina State in an elimination game Thursday. The No. 4-seeded Tigers (57-11) went 0-2 in their first CWS appearance since winning the 2009 national title.

Olympic champion serving suspension

Track: Olympic champion Veronica Campbell Brown of Jamaica is serving a suspension while anti-doping officials rule on her recent positive drug test.

The Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association announced that the 2004 and 2008 Olympic champion at 200 meters is suspended while a panel reviews the case.

Campbell Brown’s manager, Claude Bryan, said the accusation “is a shock to her.” He said Campbell Brown is “not a cheat” and she is determined to clear her name. Bryan said she does not accept “guilt of willfully taking a banned substance.”

The suspension will keep Campbell Brown out of this week’s national championships in Jamaica, where Usain Bolt is scheduled to run.

Also a world champion at 100 and 200 meters, Campbell Brown is among the most decorated athletes in Jamaica’s sprinting history.

Sharks, Couture agree to extension

NHL: The San Jose Sharks have agreed to a contract extension with star center Logan Couture to keep him off the market next summer.

The contract can’t be signed until the free agency window opens July 5.

Couture, 24, would have been eligible to be a restricted free agent next summer. He has led the team in goals the past two seasons.

The Los Angeles Kings have reached agreement on terms of a new six-year contract with defenseman Slava Voynov.

The 23-year-old Voynov contributed six goals and 13 points during the Kings’ playoff run.

Russian star Pavel Datsyuk and the Detroit Red Wings have an agreement on a three-year contract. Datsyuk led Detroit with 15 goals and 49 points in the 48-game, lockout-shortened season.

Veteran defenseman Mark Streit has agreed to a four-year, $21 million contract with the Philadelphia Flyers.
