BYU advances to NIT semifinals

Tyler Haws scored 25 points, Brock Zylstra added 23 and BYU cruised to a 79-62 victory over Southern Mississippi in the NIT quarterfinals on Wednesday night in Hattiesburg, Miss.

BYU (24-11) went on an 11-0 run early in the first half and never trailed again, leading by double digits the entire second half. Zylstra drilled five 3-pointers in the first half and the Cougars shot 11 of 27 (40.7 percent) from long range.

Brandon Davies added 12 points and 13 rebounds.

Southern Miss (27-10) lost at home for just the second time in two seasons. Daveon Boardingham led the Golden Eagles with 18 points and Jerrold Brooks added 13.

The Cougars will face Baylor in the semifinals at Madison Square Garden in New York on Tuesday.

Iowa 75, Virginia 64: Roy Devyn Marble scored 24 points and the Hawkeyes ended the Cavaliers’ 19-game home winning streak with a 75-64 victory in the NIT quarterfinals in Charlottesville, Va., earning a trip to Madison Square Garden.

Marble’s 3-pointer with 13:02 to play gave Iowa (24-12) a 42-41 lead and sparked a 19-5 run that also featured six points inside from Adam Woodbury and 3-pointers by Josh Oglesby and Zach McCabe. McCabe’s finished the run, putting the Hawkeyes ahead 58-46 with 5:18 to play.

Justin Anderson scored a career-high 24 points to lead Virginia (23-12), but the Cavaliers had no answer once the Hawkeyes took charge.

It was only the second home loss for the Cavaliers, and both denied them a trip to New York.

The first came against Delaware in the Preseason NIT, also with a trip to Madison Square Garden on the line, and had been Virginia’s last home loss.

Baylor 79, Providence 68: Pierre Jackson had 20 points and 13 assists in his final home game for Baylor as the Bears beat the Friars in an NIT quarterfinal game in Waco, Texas.

Cory Jefferson added 26 points and Rico Gathers had 10 rebounds for the Bears (21-14), who go to the NIT semifinals at Madison Square Garden for the second time in four years.

Providence (19-15) had three 20-point scorers – Bryce Cotton with 23, Vincent Council 21 and Kadeem Batts 20. Only one other player scored for the Friars, who got to the quarterfinals with a win over Robert Morris, the team that beat Kentucky in the first round.

Baylor went ahead to stay on a Cory Jefferson dunk with 8:11 left.
