Winterhawks advance to Memorial Cup finals

Hockey: Ty Rattie scored in the third period and Mac Carruth made 34 saves to help the Portland Winterhawks beat the London Knights 2-1 on Friday night in the Memorial Cup semifinal in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

The Winterhawks will face the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League champion Halifax Mooseheads on Sunday night in the Canadian Hockey League title game. Halifax beat Portland 7-4 in round-robin play in the four-team tournament.

Kuchar in lead when play suspended

Golf: Matt Kuchar was 10-under par on the 16th green when the second round of the Crown Plaza Invitational at Colonial was suspended because of an impending storm system in Fort Worth, Texas.

There were 18 groups still on the course, three still with eight holes to play, when play was stopped at 6:38 p.m. The second round at Hogan’s Alley will be completed this morning.

• Park guides USC to national title: Annie Park shot a 1-under 71 to top the individual standings and help Southern California take its third NCAA women’s tournament title in Athens, Ga.

USC finished at 19-under 1,133 to beat Duke by 21 strokes.

• Cochran, Perry top Senior PGA championship: In St. Louis, Russ Cochran and Kenny Perry each shot 5-under 66 to share the second-round lead at 7-under in the Senior PGA Championship. Former Pullman resident Kirk Triplett is at 1-under 141.

• Bowie Young leads wild round: Heather Bowie Young made birdies on half of the 12 holes the LPGA Tour scrambled to set up for the Bahamas LPGA Classic at Paradise Island, Bahamas, for a 6-under 39.

Due to severe flooding that left much of the course underwater earlier in the week, the tour decided to use the holes that were available – two of them converted to par 3s – with hopes of three rounds at 12 holes to make the inaugural event official.

Kayla Mortellaro, a former University of Idaho golfer, was 3-under. Edwall, Wash., resident Wendy Ward was even par. Former WSU golfer Kim Welch was even through four before the round was suspended.

3 American qualifiers for French Open

Tennis: Three U.S. men have qualified for the French Open for the first time since 1982.

Jack Sock of Lincoln, Neb., Denis Kudla of Arlington, Va., and Steve Johnson of Orange, Calif., all won their qualifying matches to earn berths in the main draw at Roland Garros in Paris.

NBA fines Memphis’ Tony Allen for flop

Miscellany: The NBA has fined Grizzlies guard Tony Allen $5,000 for violating the league’s anti-flopping rule during Game 2 of the NBA Western Conference finals against San Antonio.

• Bears to honor Ditka: According to the Chicago Bears, Hall of Famer Mike Ditka will have his No. 89 retired at halftime of their Monday night NFL game against the Dallas Cowboys at Soldier Field on Dec. 9.

• Snow cancels Giro’s 19th stage: The 19th stage of cycling’s Giro d’Italia in Ponte Di Legno, Italy, has been canceled due to snow along the route. Today’s stage is another mountainous leg.
