Area roundup: Whitworth’s Wright takes second at D-III track

Whitworth freshman Kerry Wright took second place in the women’s javelin to lead the Pirates on the final day of the NCAA Division III Track and Field Championships Saturday in La Crosse, Wis. Wright’s toss went 148 feet, 5 inches.

In the men’s javelin, Whitworth’s Joseph Ingram was third at 216-8. Teammate John McCormack was seventh at 213-3.

Carter Comito followed up his discus title with an 11th-place finish in the shot put (53-0 3/4).

The Whitworth men placed 15th, the women 33rd.

• Three Idaho competitors qualified for the NCAA championships after finishing among the top 12 in their events at the NCAA West Preliminary at Austin, Texas.

Jeremy Klas qualified in the javelin after taking fourth place and Ugis Svazs took 12th place in the pole vault.

Liga Velvere qualified in the women’s 400 meters after taking fourth place on Friday.

Anna Adamko’s 14th-place finish in the javelin led Washington State on Saturday. Shawna Fermin will be the Cougars’ lone representative at nationals after taking eighth in the 400 Friday.

Washington’s Baylee Mires (Mead HS) qualified Friday after taking 11th in the 800 in a school-record time of 2:05.34.

Baseball

Oregon State’s Andrew Moore went the distance, giving up seven hits, in the Beavers’ 4-0 win over Washington State in Pac-12 play in Corvallis.

OSU (44-10, 23-6) clinched at least a share of the Pac-12 title.

The Beavers scored three runs in the seventh inning to pull away.

WSU (23-31, 9-20) starter Joe Pistorese took the loss after giving up four runs on 10 hits in 6 2/3 innings.

• Troy Conyers pitched a complete-game three-hitter and San Diego edged San Francisco 2-0 in the West Coast Conference tournament title game in Stockton, Calif.

Conyers was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player. Gonzaga’s Cory LeBrun was named to the all-tournament team.

• Arizona State freshman improved to 11-0 as the Sun Devils (35-19-1, 16-13) topped Washington 14-4 in a Pac-12 Conference game at Husky Ballpark in Seattle.

Austin Voth (7-6) took the loss for the Huskies (23-32, 14-15) after giving up seven earned runs on nine hits in 5 2/3 innings.
