Law enforcement arrest man suspected of burglarizing Valley home while elderly couple slept inside

Law enforcement arrested a man suspected of burglarizing a Spokane Valley home while an elderly couple slept inside, as well as two others connected to the theft of the residents’ vehicle. Thursday, the Washington State Patrol stopped Matthew Horpel, 26, according to a news release. As the trooper approached the vehicle, Horpel sped away, leading WSP on a short pursuit before he was taken into custody. WSP found a driver’s license belonging to the female victim of a burglary near the 3700 block of South Ridgeway Drive on Horpel. Horpel told officers Friday morning that he entered the home Wednesday through unlocked garage doors and burglarized the residence. Horpel stole the husband’s telescope and the wife’s purse, as well as two laptop computers, according to the news release. He also told a Spokane County Sheriff’s detective that he stole the residents’ car, later giving it to Woodrow Bearchild, 28, and Alisa Adams, 33, according to the news release. Spokane police found Bearchild and Adams driving the stolen vehicle in the area of Carlisle Avenue and Hamilton Street, and arrested them both. Horpel was booked into Spokane County Jail on charges of residential burglary, theft and taking a motor vehicle without permission. Bearchild was booked on charges of possession of a stolen motor vehicle and three counts of drug possession. Adams was booked on charges of a stolen motor vehicle, possession of stolen property and two counts of drug possession.
