Tar Heels send No. 3 Cardinals to first loss

College basketball: Marcus Paige scored 32 points and No. 24 North Carolina broke open a tight game in the second half to upset No. 3 Louisville 93-84 to win the Hall of Fame Tipoff Tournament in Uncasville, Conn.

Brice Johnson added 13 points and Kennedy Meeks had 13 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists for the Tar Heels (4-1), who lost just a week ago at home to Belmont.

Russ Smith led all scorers with 36 points for Louisville (5-1), which came into the game on a school-record 21-game winning streak.

It was a three-point game with just over 13 minutes left when Louisville’s Montrezl Harrell picked up his fourth foul. North Carolina scored the next eight points. Harrell fouled out with 71/2 minutes left with just five points and eight rebounds.

• Duke avoids upset: Rodney Hood’s free throw with 5 seconds left helped No. 6 Duke dodge Vermont’s upset bid and gave the Blue Devils a 91-90 victory in Durham, N.C.

Jabari Parker scored 24 points and Hood finished with 22 for the Blue Devils (5-1), who blew a 15-point lead and allowed Vermont to shoot 65 percent.

Candon Rusin’s four-point play with 10.4 seconds left for Vermont tied it at 90. Hood brought the ball downcourt and was fouled. He bounced his first free throw off the rim, then swished the second.

Hector Harold scored 24 points for Vermont (1-5).

• Georgetown knocks off VCU: D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera had 26 points and Georgetown fought off Virginia Commonwealth in the second half to hang on for an 84-80 victory in the fifth-place game of the Puerto Rico Tip-Off in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

There were 61 fouls called in the game, which lasted nearly three hours

The Rams (4-2) outran the Hoyas (3-2) in their previous meeting in the 2011 when they blew out the Hoyas in the second round of the NCAA tournament on their way to the Final Four.

• Charlotte putback beats Michigan: Terrence Williams put back Willie Clayton’s miss with 0.4 seconds left, and Charlotte stunned No. 14 Michigan 63-61 in the championship game of the Puerto Rico Tip-Off.

Denzel Ingram had 12 points and Clayton added 10 points and 15 rebounds to lead the 49ers (5-1).

Nik Stauskas, who was named the tournament’s most valuable player, finished with 20 points to lead Michigan (4-2).

Without Rose, Bulls routed by Clippers

NBA: Jared Dudley scored a season-high 21 points, Chris Paul added 16 points and 17 assists, and the Los Angeles Clippers jumped all over the visiting Chicago Bulls in Derrick Rose’s absence for a 121-82 victory.

J.J. Redick scored 19 points and Blake Griffin had 15 points and 12 rebounds in the Pacific Division-leading Clippers’ seventh win in nine games.

Luol Deng scored 22 points as the Bulls got off to a rough start to their latest stretch without Rose, who tore cartilage in his right knee Friday night.

• Stuckey leads Pistons past Nets: Eastern Washington product Rodney Stuckey scored a season-high 27 points and visiting Detroit beat Brooklyn 109-97, the Nets’ fifth straight loss.

Joe Johnson made eight 3-pointers and scored a season-high 34 points, but the short-handed Nets couldn’t overcome another cold night from Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett, who were a combined 7 for 22.

UCLA women upset No. 10 Oklahoma

College women’s basketball: Atonye Nyingifa had career highs of 28 points and 16 rebounds, Nirra Fields added a career-best 17 points and UCLA outrebounded No. 10 Oklahoma on its way to an 82-76 upset in Los Angeles.

The Bruins (2-2) beat a ranked opponent for the first time this season after earlier losses to Nebraska and North Carolina.

They got rebounds from seven of their eight players in dominating the boards, 49-29, including a 20-5 edge on the offensive glass.

Nicole Griffin scored 19 points for the Sooners (4-2).

• Louisville outlasts Florida State: Asia Taylor scored six points in overtime along with an assist that helped No. 4 Louisville pull away for a 69-59 win over visiting Florida State.

Shoni Schimmel added a 3-pointer en route to a game-high 21 points as the Cardinals (6-0) outscored the Seminoles (4-1) 15-5 in the extra session of a tense game.

Real Salt Lake advances to MLS Cup

Miscellany: Robbie Findley’s first-half goal put a comeback out of reach for the Timbers and visiting Real Salt Lake advanced to the MLS Cup with a 1-0 victory over Portland for a 5-2 aggregate advantage in the Western Conference final.

Salt Lake took a 4-2 lead two weeks ago at Rio Tinto Stadium in the opener of the two-leg series. RSL, which won the league championship in 2009, will play Sporting Kansas City for this season’s title on Dec. 7.

• Wings add to Sabres’ woes: Jonas Gustavsson made 21 saves, including a stop on Steve Ott’s penalty shot, and the visiting Detroit Red Wings sent the Buffalo Sabres to their fourth straight loss, 3-1. The Sabres are winless since a victory in interim head coach Ted Nolan’s first game Nov. 15.
