Moore, Stroud share lead at CIMB Classic

Golf: Chris Stroud and Ryan Moore overcame mistakes and bogeys on the back nine Saturday for a share of the lead after the third round of the CIMB Classic in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Stroud started the day five strokes back but surged into contention after five birdies on the front nine – including four in a row – before hitting into the water on the 12th hole and carding two bogeys for a 4-under-par 68. Moore (69) opened up a three-shot lead on the back nine only to bogey four of five holes to give it right back. Both were at 12-under 204, one stroke out in front.

The tournament is an official PGA Tour event for the first time. The winner will receive a two-year PGA Tour exemption and a spot in the Masters.

• Perry, four others share lead at AT&T Championship: Kenny Perry bogeyed the final hole to drop into a five-way tie for the lead in the Champions Tour’s AT&T Championship in San Antonio.

Perry followed his opening-round 65 with a 71 to match Mike Goodes, Bernhard Langer, Colin Montgomerie and Anders Forsbrand at 8-under 136.

Former Pullman resident Kirk Triplett was tied for sixth, just a shot back at 7-under.

• Pettersen maintains lead at Taiwan: Defending champion Suzann Pettersen struggled with three early bogeys but recovered for a 1-over-par 73 to maintain a four-shot lead in the LPGA Taiwan Championship in Yangmei, Taiwan.

Pettersen dropped three shots over the first five holes but had three birdies and one bogey the rest of the way to finish three rounds at 6-under 210.

Ladd’s shootout goal lifts Jets over Stars

NHL: Andrew Ladd scored the only goal in a shootout, Ondrej Pavelec made 35 saves and the visiting Winnipeg Jets beat the Dallas Stars 2-1 to snap a three-game losing streak.

The Jets played past regulation for the third straight game and fourth in the past five.

Kari Lehtonen had 37 saves for Dallas, including four in the final minute of overtime.

• Rangers edge Red Wings in OT: Derick Brassard’s breakaway goal with only 12.9 seconds showing on the overtime clock gave the New York Rangers a 3-2 win over the host Detroit Red Wings.

Benoit Pouliot had a goal and an assist and Mats Zuccarello also scored for New York, which rallied from 1-0 and 2-1 deficits.

• Sharks earn rare win at Montreal: Antti Niemi made 22 saves, Logan Couture scored twice and the San Jose Sharks won in Montreal for the first time since December 2002.

• Broken hand sidelines Ducks’ Silfverberg: Anaheim Ducks forward Jakob Silfverberg will be out for 4 to 6 weeks after a slash from Ottawa’s Jared Cowen – a former Spokane Chief – broke his hand Friday night.

Serena, Na reach WTA Championship finals

Tennis: Serena Williams, in obvious discomfort and walking slowly during changeovers, struggled past Jelena Jankovic 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 and will play Li Na in the final of the WTA Championships in Istanbul.

Li advanced to her first WTA Championships final by sweeping Petra Kvitova 6-4, 6-2.

• Federer to face del Potro in Swiss Indoors final: Roger Federer edged Vasek Pospisil 6-3, 6-7 (3), 7-5 to set up a showdown with Juan Martin del Potro for the Swiss Indoors title in Basel, Switzerland.

Del Potro beat Edouard Roger- Vasselin of France 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.

Chan opens season with Skate Canada win

Miscellany: Patrick Chan opened the Olympic season with a victory at Skate Canada in Saint John, New Brunswick.

The Canadian star and three-time world champion landed two huge quad jumps to open his free program and finished with 262.03 points.

Japan’s Yuzuru Hanyu followed at 234.8, and teammate Nobunari Oda was third at 233.0.

Russian sensation Julia Lipnitskaia, 15, won the women’s title, finishing with 198.23 points after a near flawless long program. Japan’s Akiko Suzuki was second at 193.75. American Gracie Gold, the leader Friday after the short program, was third at 186.65.

Olympic ice dance champions Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir kicked off what will likely be their final season, winning their fifth Skate Canada title. The Canadians finished at 181.03.

Italy’s Stefania Berton and Ondrej Hotarek won in pairs at 193.92.

• Gut claims season-opening women’s giant slalom: Lara Gut of Switzerland made her commanding first-run lead hold up to win the season-opening women’s World Cup giant slalom in Soelden, Austria.

The Swiss skier led the field by 0.77 after the opening run before finishing in an aggregate 2 minutes, 25.16 seconds. Kathrin Zettel of Austria came in second, 0.84 back, and Viktoria Rebensburg of Germany took third, 1.28 off the lead. Four-time overall champion Lindsey Vonn skipped the race and plans to start her season next month after recovering from knee surgery.

• Jones, Williams make bobsled squad: Olympic sprinting gold medalist Lauryn Williams and Olympic hurdles veteran Lolo Jones were among nine women chosen for the U.S. women’s national bobsled team, putting them in the mix for spots on the team that will race in February at the Sochi Olympics.

• Morgan out for U.S. women’s soccer team: Alex Morgan is sidelined with an ankle injury and will miss the U.S. women’s national team match against New Zealand today in San Francisco.
