Eagles swept by Vikings

Preseason No. 1 Portland State dealt visiting Eastern Washington a 25-17, 25-19, 25-15 Big Sky Conference volleyball defeat Monday night.

Sophomore Allie Schumacher led the Eagles (4-9, 1-1 Big Sky) with seven kills and 11 digs and classmate Kellen Barfield had three blocks.

Juniors Talia Fermantez and Melissa Waelter added five kills apiece for Eastern and senior Lindsay Niemeier dished out 21 assists.

Eastern played the Vikings close in the first two sets, but PSU dominated the third set.

Cheyne Corrado led the Vikings (5-7, 2-0) with 16 kills. PSU outhit the Eagles .276-.140 and had 11 aces to EWU’s two.

Men’s golf

With sophomore Samson Martinez and senior Stephen Plopper combining for a 20-stroke improvement in their scores, Whitworth lowered its team score by seven strokes to climb three spots for a 15th-place finish in the Tournament Town Championship Preview in Greensboro, N.C.

Martinez had a 12-stroke improvement (95-83) and Plopper (Mead) an eight-stroke improvement (83-75).

Whitworth shot 314-307 for a 621 for 36 holes, finishing, 31 shots back of champion Illinois Wesleyan.

Whit sophomore Oliver Rudnicki, who strung three straight birdies at one point Monday, shot 72-74 – 146 to finish fourth.
