In brief: Tiger Woods good to tee it up at Valhalla

Golf: Three days after he withdrew from the final round at Firestone due to back pain, Tiger Woods arrived for the PGA Championship at Valhalla in Louisville, Kentucky, on Wednesday and pronounced himself fit to play.

The former world No. 1 played played nine holes with Davis Love III, Steve Stricker and Harris English without showing a trace of pain.

Woods said his trainer adjusted a joint that was pinching a different nerve from the one that led to back surgery. He said he was pain-free.

Directors to vote on autonomy

NCAA: The NCAA board of directors will vote today on a proposal that would give the five wealthiest college football conferences the ability to make rules and pass legislation without the approval of the rest of Division I schools.

The 65 schools in the power conferences want to be allowed to spend their growing revenues on things such as scholarships that cover the full cost of attending college.

The most vocal critic has been Boise State President Bob Kustra.

Holt picked Preseason All-Pac-12

Women’s volleyball: Washington State sophomore Kyra Holt was named to the 2014 Preseason All-Pac-12 Volleyball team.

The team was selected by a vote of the league’s coaches.

Holt was the AVCA Pacific North Region Freshman of the Year, an All-Pac-12 honorable mention and a Pac-12 All-Freshman first team member in 2013.

The 6-foot-1 outside hitter led the Cougars with 3.89 kills per set last season.
